Genesis Club House, Inc.

Genesis Club House, Inc. Genesis Club is work-focused community of hope and dignity where mental health recovery is possible.

Genesis Club opened its doors on September 15, 1988 with 25 members. Twelve months prior, a committed and passionate Board of Directors decided that the city of Worcester should have a free-standing Clubhouse community. This decision was made after a visit to Fountain House in New York City, the first clubhouse model in the country. From a modest beginning, Genesis Club has developed a highly recognized Accredited Clubhouse with Clubhouse International that is an Evidenced Based Practice with the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Genesis Club offers vocational training, education, employment, housing, wellness and social supports to over 550 members each year. Most importantly, Genesis Club offers a community of hope and dignity where recovery is possible. Genesis Club is one of twelve training centers of Clubhouse International. Since that time, the Genesis International Training Center has trained over 300 Clubhouses, 2000 colleagues from 35 states and 16 countries. Genesis Club strives to be a leading community partner with Worcester employers, landlords, families, colleges/universities and health care providers.

This week we celebrate Elizabeth Betty Price, a feminist trailblazer who helped establish the City of Worcester’s Charter Commission, an elected body of citizens that established our present form of municipal government. She served as the first director of Prospect House, a human service organization that served the poorest in the City of Worcester. To honor her legacy, the City built the Betty Price Playground in the Belmont Hill neighborhood.

Join us in congratulating Tyrone for his participation at the “Echoes of Hope and Resilience” event sponsored by DMH, Open Sky, and Advocates last week. The event was a celebration of Black History Month. Tyrone said of his role on the speakers panel, “A few years back I would not have had the courage to do this, but with the support of my community, I overcame my self-doubt. It was great and I was glad to be a part of it.” Being part of a strong Clubhouse, where members have the opportunity to build their confidence and self-esteem, helps members go beyond what they thought possible. Congratulations, Tyrone!

Join us in welcoming home Ruth Osterman, program director, as she returns from France, where she was part of an accreditation team in Nantes. Clubhouse de Nantes is a vibrant and energetic young Clubhouse. We hope we left them with good ideas for further growth!” It is exciting to be part of a thriving, global movement! Genesis Club wishes you a happy Presidents day! Here at the club we will be enjoying a delicious meal and some excellent Genesis Club fellowship.

In these times of political uncertainty we wanted to highlight the words of President Barack Obama who In 2022 convened young leaders from around the world to create a global vision for the future of democracy. He said:

"If we want democracy to flourish, we will have to fight for it. We'll have to nurture it. And we will have to demonstrate its value, again and again, in improving the lives of ordinary people". - Barack Obama

Sarah Ella Wilson, born in Worcester, was an exceptional educator, teaching first graders at Belmont Street School for nearly 50 years. Her portrait still hangs in the school library to this day. As a way to honor her contributions to elementary education, Worcester State University established a scholarship named for her to support African American students majoring in education who plan to teach in the local school system.
Sarah was also very active in the local Women’s Progressive Club, the Worcester Inter-racial Council, and the NAACP. Like many teachers of today, Sarah Ella Wilson’s influence extended well beyond the classroom!
