Have trouble sleeping through the night? You're not alone.
Here are the top reasons I've observed throughout my years of helping busy people get back on track:
1) Blood sugar imbalance
- Not enough protein during the day or too many carbs in the evening can cause blood sugar to drop, and that spikes your cortisol, which will have you wide awake in the middle of the night
đź’ˇ The Fix: Add more protein all day, or swap the evening carb-heavy snack for some protein. A scoop of almond butter before bed anyone?
2) Cortisol imbalance
- Chronic stress over time can cause the cortisol to be lower in the morning (when it's supposed to be high) and higher at night (when it should be low). This causes a tired feeling during the day and being wide awake at night.
đź’ˇ The Fix: Working on the underlying cause(s) of your stress or working with a functional medicine practice can help get your cortisol levels back in balance
3) Inflammation
- Chronic inflammation can cause lighter sleep due to discomfort.
đź’ˇ The Fix: Consider food sensitivities or an anti-inflammatory diet to reverse this
4) Emotions from the day are being processed during sleep
- If you run all day long and have no time to think through your day, then your brain is processing while you sleep
đź’ˇ The Fix: Try journaling, a brain dump, or some downtime to think through your day prior to going to bed. Your mind can then let it go and sleep better
5) Your liver is busy processing
- The liver is more active at night
- If it's overloaded from toxins, inflammation, or poor dietary choices, then it can disrupt your sleep cycles
đź’ˇ The Fix: Work on cleaning up inflammatory foods and reducing toxin exposure
