We’re excited to continue our monthly series celebrating the incredible people who make Boundless what it is. Each month, we spotlight a member of our team and share the passion they bring to our mission of building a world that realizes the boundless potential of all people.

This month, we’re proud to feature Zachary Gula, a Physician Associate and Outpatient Provider at our Perrysburg Clinic.

Zachary joined Boundless in April 2024, and one of his favorite parts of the role is meeting new individuals and families and building meaningful connections with them. He enjoys working closely with people and their support systems to help improve mental health and overall quality of life.

What motivates Zachary most is the impact those relationships can have. Knowing that his work can positively support patients and families — not just clinically, but holistically — is what drives him each day.

Outside of work, Zachary enjoys spending time outdoors and exploring interests in science, philosophy, and music. A fun fact you might not know — he loves going ice fishing.

When reflecting on Boundless values, Zachary resonates most with Love, believing that compassion and genuine care are the foundation for building trust and supporting mental health.

Help us celebrate Zachary and stay tuned as we continue introducing more members of the Boundless team each month. 💛

The term “high-functioning autism” is widely used — but it often misses what really matters.

Autism isn’t a scale from low to high. It’s a spectrum of strengths, challenges, and support needs that can look very different for each person

Someone may communicate verbally, live independently, or succeed at work or school — and still experience sensory overload, anxiety, or executive functioning challenges. Labels like “high-functioning” can unintentionally minimize those realities.

That’s why clinicians and many self-advocates focus on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and support needs, rather than outdated functioning labels. Support levels describe the type of help someone needs — not their worth, ability, or potential

Understanding the language we use helps create better support, clearer expectations, and more inclusion for everyone.

💊 Tech That Transforms: Medication Dispensers

Taking medication safely and consistently can be a major step toward greater independence. For many individuals, the right assistive technology makes that possible.

Medication dispensers range from simple, low-tech organizers to smart systems that send real-time caregiver alerts if a dose is missed. The key is finding the right level of support for the person’s needs.

Options may include:
✔️ Day/time labeled compartments
✔️ Audible reminders and flashing prompts
✔️ Locked, scheduled dose release
✔️ Caregiver text alerts for missed doses
✔️ App-based tracking and refill reminders

When matched thoughtfully, these tools can support:
🔹Medication adherence
🔹Increased independence
🔹 Reduced caregiver stress
🔹 Improved health and safety outcomes

The best solution depends on the individual’s abilities, goals, and support environment, which is why Assistive Technology consultation matters.

Autism doesn’t look one way, and the signs can show up differently at every stage of life.

From early childhood to adolescence and adulthood, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can affect how a person communicates, interacts, and experiences the world. Some signs are easy to spot, others are subtle, and many are often misunderstood or missed entirely.

Understanding the signs and symptoms of autism isn’t about labeling, it’s about recognizing differences early, offering the right support, and helping people thrive in their own way. And while early identification can be helpful, support and understanding are valuable at any age.

We break down the signs of autism across different life stages, common traits, and why early (or later) support can make a meaningful difference.

🧠 What Is “Profound Autism” — and Why Is It Being Discussed?

A recent AP News article explores the growing national conversation around the term “profound autism.”

The term is often used to describe autistic individuals who have significant support needs, including intellectual disability and limited or no spoken language, but not everyone agrees on how or whether it should be used.

As language evolves, it shapes policy, perception, funding, and access to care. That’s why these conversations matter.

At Boundless, we focus on person-centered care, meeting people where they are and recognizing that autism exists across a wide spectrum of strengths, needs, and experiences.

We encourage thoughtful dialogue grounded in respect, lived experience, and evidence.

As the definition of autism has widened, there’s been a growing push to separate profound autism into its own diagnosis.

On March 1, we recognized Zero Discrimination Day — a global reminder that dignity, respect, and inclusion aren’t optional. They’re foundational.

This year’s theme, People First, challenges us to move beyond words and build systems that reflect that belief in action. For individuals with I/DD, discrimination often shows up quietly — in lowered expectations, rushed appointments, or spaces that weren’t designed with them in mind.

At Boundless, putting people first isn’t a slogan. It’s how we deliver whole-person, whole-life care — from residential support and employment services to behavioral health and primary care. We see strengths before diagnoses. Potential before limitations. Belonging beyond access.

Zero discrimination starts with how we choose to show up — for our neighbors, our families, and our communities.

How Person-First Care Helps End Discrimination

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month — a time to move beyond labels and focus on people.

Developmental disabilities can affect how a person learns, communicates, moves, or experiences the world. But they don’t define someone’s potential, goals, or value.

At Boundless, we support individuals and families across every stage of life — through health care, education, employment, supported living, and community connection — because support should meet people where they are.

Awareness matters. But understanding, inclusion, and access to the right supports are what create real opportunity.

This month (and every month), we’re proud to stand with the individuals we serve as they build lives filled with dignity, independence, and belonging.

New assistive technology is opening doors to independence in powerful ways 💻✨

Researchers and students at Quinnipiac University have developed AccessiMove™, a hands-free software tool that allows people with disabilities and motor impairments to control computers — and even wheelchairs — using facial gestures and AI.

Using a standard we**am, the software tracks movements like head tilts, blinks, and facial gestures to:
🧠 Navigate a computer
🖱️ Control a cursor and make selections
🦽 Support hands-free wheelchair movement
🏥 Improve communication in healthcare settings
🎮 Expand access to learning, gaming, and daily activities

What makes this especially exciting is its accessibility: no special hardware, no expensive equipment — just technology designed to meet people where they are.

It’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when innovation centers on dignity, independence, and real-world use.

The hands-free input system uses AI with communication entirely through facial gestures to help provide more independence for those with limited mobility.
