Let's hear it for all of our October birthdays! Francis, Don, Richard, Elena, Carol, and Paty all celebrated birthdays at the Meadows this month as did Jayse, Malida, Gladys, Tom L., JoAnn, Emily, Jim, and Thomas J. Happy birthday to all of you!

Our October Happy Hour event was fishing themed was a "reel" good time! The event brought us many fun photo ops, delicious snacks (thank you to Fareway Stores Worthington for giving us a "whale" of a deal on your delicious seafood salad), and a fin-tastic music performance by Gloria Jean!

The party ended with a special surprise from Gloria Jean. Gloria knows that we are fundraising to purchase new wheelchair accessible transportation and wanted to help so she purchased beautiful handmade quilts (one queen with a matching throw/lap robe and one king size quilt) and donated them to us to raffle off! We are working out the raffle details and will be sharing more information soon. We are so very grateful for Gloria's support and generosity!

Our "Glamor Shots" photo shoot was an absolute blast! Doesn't everyone look great?! This is just a small sample of the photos we took. There are many more on display this week in our north dining room. Feel free to stop by and check them out! We'd like to say a special thanks to our friends at Worthington Memorial Auditorium of Performing Arts for sharing their items from their costume closet with us!

Amanda has the cutest display on her shelf! We asked her about it and learned that she hand-painted this Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs set. Amanda invited us into her apartment to take a look at other work she has done. She has a kissing Dutch boy and girl, a cute snail family, and lots of other ceramic pieces that she painted decorating her home. Every single piece is flawless!

In 1999, Amanda was looking for a constructive hobby to occupy her time. She did some sewing and thought about gardening before she decided on painting after taking a trip to the ceramic store. Amanda believes that the key to loving a hobby is start with something you like. As for her painting precision, Amanda chalks it up to a steady hand and lots of prayer!

Ilene Clark of Vintage Boutique at Antiques 86 on the Farm presented "Downsizing and Decluttering 101" at Community Coffee this week. A huge crowd turned out to hear her speak.

In 2010, after she and a friend moved her parents no less than seven times, Ilene started a business to help people with the often-overwhelming task of downsizing. A number of people who have moved into the Meadows over the years utilized Ilene's services, which took away a lot of stress and made the whole process go smoothly.

Ilene offered a plenitude of helpful hints and advice for anyone looking to downsize or just declutter their home. Here are just a few of the tips she shared:
• Aprons hold a lot!
• Use clear tubs with attached lids and boxes with handles.
• Use paper towels when packing glassware. Newspaper ink can damage your items.
• Start small. Just cleaning out a purse is a great way to start and get into the mood.
• Always keep family history items like marriage & birth certificates, photos, etc. They don't take up much room, and they may mean a lot to future generations.
• Make it fun by color coding or having a weekly "Tidy Up Tuesday"

Thank you, Ilene for the great presentation and for the motivation!

Students taking communication classes at Minnesota West Community and Technical College interviewed our residents about their life journeys for a school project. The students will gather their interview notes and write an article and will also give a speech in class about the person they interviewed. If their schedule allows (we have our fingers crossed that it does), they will come back to present their speeches at a future Community Coffee event! There were lots of great conversations happening while they were here. Each participating resident was given a Minnesota West t-shirt. It was a great experience all around!

We have expanded our nursing team and are so excited to introduce our new RN, Jessica! This new position was created to enhance our team member experience and help us better serve our residents. Jessica's responsibilities include Resident Assistant orientation, training, and audits, as well as providing care to our residents.

Jessica comes to us with a 19-year nursing career. When asked why she became a Nurse, she replied, "I know it sounds cliche, but I love helping people!" As for why she chose Ecumen Meadows, Jessica shared "Through the course of my career, I found that I absolutely adore the senior generations and I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue my lifework here at the Meadows."

Welcome, Jessica! We are so happy to have you on our team!
