We’re excited to announce our latest transportation fundraising project… a Quilt Raffle!

This raffle has a very special story behind it. For 15 years, Gloria Wieneke Carlberg has graciously entertained residents at Ecumen Meadows. She became especially aware of our transportation needs when her mother-in-law, Norma, was a resident. Norma loved watching Gloria perform and enjoyed going on outings with friends and family to local restaurants.

In honor of Norma, all of her sons have contributed donations toward our transportation drive. Gloria has generously donated beautiful quilts she purchased from seamstress Pam Kramer, and even covered the printing costs for the raffle tickets—showing just how deeply she believes in the importance of better transportation for our residents.

🎟️ Raffle Details

-Tickets: $10 each (two chances to win per ticket)
-Prizes: One King-size quilt and one Queen-size quilt with a matching lap quilt
-Drawing Date: February 13th

Tickets will be available Sunday evening at the Lismore Legion’s Feather Party. You can also purchase tickets by stopping at Ecumen Meadows or by mailing a check with your name, address, and phone number—we’ll send your numbered ticket stubs back to you.

What a fantastic turnout for Judge Jeffrey Flynn’s presentation at Community Coffee on Tuesday! We had a record-breaking 66 attendees—including 24 residents (with Jeff’s proud mother Vivian among them), 8 team members, and 34 guests.

Jeff divided his talk into three parts:

-His journey: Growing up in Worthington, attending St. John’s University and William Mitchell Law School, passing the bar in 1975, practicing law until 1984, then serving on the bench in Minnesota’s Fifth Judicial District until his retirement in 2012.

-Understanding the system: An insightful overview of governmental and judicial power, from local to national levels, along with laws and statutes.

-“You can’t make this stuff up!”: Entertaining stories from his career, including memorable and often amusing courtroom moments.

One highlight was Jeff’s recollection of a jury trial in Fairmont involving a man accused of stealing three pigs. After lengthy deliberations (and a lunch break), the jurors revealed they had known their verdict all along—they just wanted a free lunch!

Another memorable story came from his time as a judge. While swearing in a deputy at his home, Jeff raised his hand to begin the oath, only to have the deputy slap it—thinking he was asking for a high five!

Jeff’s career was filled with remarkable experiences, and we’re so grateful he shared them with us. Thank you, Jeff, for giving our community such an engaging and unforgettable presentation!

On November 3rd, we were thrilled to welcome Bill as our newest resident at Ecumen Meadows.

Bill’s journey has been full of hard work and service: after high school he worked at a Caterpillar Inc. factory, drove for Hadley Creamery picking up milk from local farms, and proudly served in the Army. After his service, he farmed in rural Wilmont before retiring and moving into town.

About 10 months ago, Bill was at Sibley Specialty Care. While there, he reconnected with Carol Balster, who was in rehab after a fall. Both originally from Wilmont, they already knew each other—Bill even bought a truck from Carol’s late husband Rich years ago! Carol shared how much she enjoys life at Ecumen Meadows, and Bill decided to join her here.

We’re so happy to have Bill in our community, and we love that friendships and familiar connections continue to bring people together at Ecumen Meadows

We love it when District 518 students come in to join us for intergenerational activities. A visit from the 5th grade class this week was extra special for Mary Ann because her grandson Sebastian was one of the students!

Joyce and her twin brother Jim, along with their sister Kathy and Jim's wife Linda, enjoyed a mini-family reunion over coffee and pie. Jim made a special stop at the Meadows from his home in Albert Lea to see Joyce before he and Linda head to Arizona for the winter. Twins Joyce and Jim were born on May 28th. Joyce shared that she was born six minutes before Jim, adding "He has been a gentleman from the start. He let me arrive first!"

We recently held a team member led watercolor class. We painted a spooky tree for Halloween and a colorful dandelion puff. Each artist added their own unique twist to the design and every single one turned out beautifully! We used postcards as our canvases so watch your mailbox; YOU just may be one of the lucky recipients of artwork and good wishes from our artists!

If you follow our page, you know that our residents have led fascinating lives — so it probably won’t surprise you to learn that their children have, too!

Karen and Ken Temple’s daughter, Holly, competed in pageants in the late 1980s. She was a finalist in Miss Minnesota Teen and runner-up in Miss T.E.E.N. (Teens Encouraging Excellence Nationally). Holly also won several categories, including Judge’s Interview, Congeniality, and Most Photogenic. She truly enjoyed the experience, which she describes as character-building and a celebration of inner beauty as well.

Holly now lives in Canada but visits her family a couple of times a year. It’s not every day we have a bona fide beauty queen in our building, so when we heard she was coming, it sparked a fun idea! We asked Holly if she would like to call Bingo during her visit — and being the good sport she is, she happily agreed.

Instead of our regular Bingo, we hosted “Beauty Queen Bingo!” Holly called out the numbers, and those lucky enough to shout “Bingo!” got to pick from a prize table filled with special treats, including lotions, perfumes, and more.

After the final game, we tallied up all the Bingos, and the man and woman with the most wins were crowned our Bingo King and Queen! Holly’s dad, Ken, proudly claimed the title of Bingo King, and Phyllis was our radiant Bingo Queen.

Thank you, Holly, for such a fun and beautiful afternoon!

Meet David, one of our newest residents at Ecumen Meadows! He moved in just a week and a half ago — but it already feels like he’s been part of our community forever. David seems to know just about everyone he runs into!

After an incredible 40-year career driving a welding truck, David built countless friendships along the way. Before moving in, he was already a familiar face around The Meadows, often visiting his brother-in-law, resident Richard Cam.

And talk about a small world — on move-in day, David got a fun surprise: his neighbor right across the hall is Ruby Moore, the same “neighbor girl” he grew up next to and rode the school bus with for 12 years!

David is kind, easygoing, and always up for a good chat. We’re so happy to officially welcome him to The Meadows family!
