The Significance of Spiritual Care for African American Christian Patients with Serious Illnesses
*Rev. Gloria E. White-Hammond, MD, MDiv., Co-Pastor, Bethel A.M.E. Church, Boston
Recent literature assesses evidence regarding spirituality and health. Balboni (2022) offers supportive evidence for the importance of addressing spirituality in serious illness and health as part of person-centered, value-sensitive care. Rev. Gloria E. White-Hammond, MD, MDiv., will highlight the historical, theological, and cultural contexts that contribute to how such patients may approach serious illnesses, including the common belief in miracles and identify how experiences of historical and present-day systemic racism and implicit biases might complicate interactions. Rev. Gloria E. White-Hammond, MD, MDiv., will describe consensus-suggested implications for healthcare professionals regarding how to address spirituality in caring for patients with serious illness. The speaker will also introduce the principle of ubuntu— “I am because we are”— as a basis for counteracting implicit bias and enhancing cross-cultural interaction.
