Many of us are familiar with the saying "When two vowels go walking, the first one starts talking and says its name". It's often taught to students as they begin learning to read.

The issue is that this statement isn’t true for many words. Steak, believe, bear, said, vein, loud, and reaction are just a few examples. may initially appear to follow this rule, however and are separate graphemes in this word. They are not representing a digraph.

These words are not exceptions to the "rule". They serve as proof that the rule is an inaccurate representation of how the English spelling system works.

Were you taught the "two vowels go walking" rule?

Can you think of other words that further disprove this rule?

Book Description
In this powerful and inspiring picture book, a deaf girl stands up for herself and takes off her shoes while dancing at her Carnival performance so she can feel the music through her bare feet.

Cesaria is going to perform for the seaside Carnival. She skips past the beach barefoot, dressed in her favorite peacock leotard.

But when her dance director tells her she must put on her shoes to go on stage, Cesaria signs, “Peacocks don’t wear shoes!”

You see, Cesaria hears the music through the soles of her feet, but no one seems to understand…

…That is, until all the dancers take off their shoes, and learn to feel the music, just like Cesaria.

Cesaria Feels the Beat is a lyrical and heartfelt story about deafness, community, and Carnival.

Help! My child is spelling "jumped" as "jumpt"!

Children who have been primarily taught to "sound words out" will often spell words phonetically.

Increasing their morphological awareness skills will better enable them to spell words correctly.

In the case of the word , the base is and there is an suffix present to represent the past tense.

The phonemes (sounds) associated with the suffix vary based on the words that it is present in, but the spelling remains the same (ex: "stopped", "painted", and "hugged".)

What spelling errors have you noticed your child making?

Are they also spelling phonetically?

Book Description
A young girl aspires to dance despite her disability.

Welcome to Sametown where everyone and everything is...well...the same. Except Mara! She's a little different. She’ bright. She’s sunny. And, unlike her classmates who are all planning on performing a similar magic show act at the school talent show, she is going to dance, dance, dance! One problem: everyone in Sametown – her classmates, her teacher—they all think she shouldn’t do it. And it’s not just (it seems) because dancing isn’t the status quo in Sametown...It’s because they just don’t believe in Mara. Mara won't let their dissuading and even their heckling rock her spirit, though. She’s Mighty Mara, and she’s about to shake she some new life into her muted town. In the most surprising and beautiful of ways.
