A long-running study from the University of Helsinki found that women who regularly engage in traditional ā€œgrandma hobbiesā€ such as knitting, sewing, crocheting, and gardening tend to live up to eight years longer on average.

These activities help calm the nervous system by lowering stress and promoting a meditative, focused state through repetitive movement.

They also build confidence by creating a sense of purpose, routine, and visible accomplishment.

Mentally, such hobbies keep the brain active, supporting memory, attention, and cognitive flexibility as women age.

Together, these effects show that simple, creative pastimes can be deeply therapeutic, emotionally grounding, and beneficial for long-term health.

Drumming on exercise balls is a fun and energizing activity that seniors truly enjoy! It gets everyone moving to the rhythm while improving coordination, strength, and range of motion—all in a safe and engaging way. The upbeat music and group setting create lots of laughter and connection, making exercise feel more like a celebration than a workout. It’s a great way to boost mood, encourage participation, and keep our residents active and smiling. šŸ„šŸ’™

Jewelry making is more than just a fun activity—it offers wonderful benefits for seniors in a community setting. Creating jewelry helps improve fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination while encouraging creativity and self-expression. It also provides a sense of accomplishment as residents see their finished pieces come to life. Best of all, jewelry making is a social activity, bringing residents together to share ideas, laughter, and conversation, which supports emotional well-being and meaningful connections. šŸ’āœØ

New Haven Assisted Living Wylie,Texas

New Haven Assisted Living and Memory Care is a family of boutique senior living communities for residents who need assistance with day-to-day activities or care for serious medical issues, including memory loss.

New Haven is different from other assisted living communities in that we’re small and personal—only 16 residents per home—so we can tailor our programs and our activities to the needs of our individual residents.

Best of all, our residences are designed specifically to feel like home. We’ve organized them around a central kitchen that serves as a gathering place for residents and eliminated long hallways so that everyone feels connected.

Please reach out to us at hello@newhaventexas.com for any questions.
