“Starting To Run At 60” with AFC member Darlene Faust.

Darlene started running in her late 50s and went on to complete 12+ marathons, including five World Majors and a Boston qualifying time.

Then in August 2024, everything changed—cardiac arrest, open heart surgery, and a pacemaker.

Eight months later, she ran a half marathon. About a year later, she ran the New York City Marathon.

In this episode, we talk about building fitness later in life, staying consistent, and what it really takes to come back after a major setback.

Learn to Protect Yourself 💪

Join us at AFC for a 90-minute self-defense workshop designed to give you practical tools to stay safe.

We’ll cover strategies to avoid dangerous situations (like running with earbuds, parking in dark areas, or traveling alone) but also teach you how to fight back if you need to. You’ll learn:

✅ How to throw a proper punch and kick
✅ How to use elbows and knees effectively
✅ The most vulnerable areas to target so you can get away safely

This class is for everyone! No experience required. Come gain confidence, awareness, and skills that could make all the difference.

Meet Adriane!

A lifelong Berks County resident, Adriane lives in Wyomissing with her husband, David, and their four children. For the past nine years, she has coached cross country at Wyomissing Area High School, where the boys and girl’s teams combined have earned a State Championship, multiple District III Championships, and a County Championship. When not coaching, Adriane also works at Fleet Feet West Reading as the Buyer since 2019.

With a strong passion for running and fitness, Adriane is a certified personal trainer and a dedicated competitor who has participated in races across the region for decades. As a trainer, her goal is to help her clients feel and live their best lives while becoming strong and fit.

Her raceportfolio includes the St. Luke’s Half Marathon, the Philadelphia Half Marathon, the Runner’s World Half Marathon, and, most recently, the prestigious ASICS Falmouth Road Race in Cape Cod, MA.

MyZone challenge starts MONDAY!!

If you have a MyZone and you are already registered in the app and have AFC is your selected facility then you don't have to do anything else! You are good to go.

To view the challenge:
- login into your MyZone app
- click "Menu" on the bottom right hand side
- click "Challenges"
- click "April AFC MyZone Challenge"

A few things to remember:

- This is a 4 week challenge that will end on May 3rd
- Hit at least 1300 MEPs during the challenge
- Blue: 2 pts/min, Green: 3 pts/min, Yellow/Red (hard): 4 pts/min
- 2 ways to win- highest total number of MEPs & most MEPs in Blue (zone 2)

Also, for the sake of this challenge, cleaning or yard work does not count. So please be honest and intentional!

What counts:
-Running
-Lifting
-Hiking
-Walking
-Classes
-Cardio Sessions
-Sports

Twice this month, Coach Collin & Coach Sarah had the opportunity to be a guest speaker for the “Fitness for Life” class at Penn State Berks- which is an honors level Kinesiology class.

They talked through how to feel confident walking into a gym, broke down the fundamentals of strength training, showed how to actually structure a workout, and finished with hands-on demonstrations so students could put it all into practice.

If there’s one thing we hope they took away, it’s this: you don’t need to have it all figured out to get started- you just need a plan, a little guidance, and the willingness to walk through the door.

MYZONE CHALLENGE STARTING APRIL 6TH!!!

The goal: earn at least 1300 Myzone Effort Points (MEPs) throughout the challenge. Whether you’re in classes, lifting, or getting in extra cardio on your own, every effort counts.

We’ll have two winners:
• Highest total MEPs (with a cap on Zone 5 points)
• Most MEPs earned in Zone 2

This is a free challenge, but you’ll need a Myzone heart rate monitor to participate.

We just got a fresh batch of Myzone Switches in PLUS the brand new Myzone Max that just dropped. They will each be on sale for $109. (The Max retails for $149). If you’ve been thinking about getting one, this is the time.

ONE RULE: only intentional training counts. Lifting, running, walking, hiking, classes, sports get the green light. Cleaning your house or doing yard work does NOT count. So please be honest!
