Women’s History Month Spotlight: Dr. Ruth Fox

Today, we honor Dr. Ruth Fox, the founder and first medical director of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), the critical structure for substance use disorder care curriculum. She is recognized for her pioneering contributions to psychiatry and has played a key role in developing contemporary approaches to treating substance use disorders.

Her work helped make it more common to believe that:
✨Medically-assisted treatment (MAT) can play an important role in treating substance use disorders.
✨Substance use disorders should be handled with evidence-based m**hods, not with moral judgment or punishment.

Did you know that the demand for behavioral health and substance use treatment continues to rise—growing at an estimated 13.8% annually?

What’s driving it? Increased access through telehealth and the expansion of integrated care models, which make it easier for individuals to receive coordinated, whole-person support. Telehealth, in particular, is helping remove barriers by improving access, convenience, and care coordination for patients seeking mental health and substance use services.

At Triumph Treatment Services, we’re meeting this growing need head on.

From inpatient and long term residential and outpatient programs to outpatient mental health and psychiatric services, to case-managed housing, Triumph continues to expand services to support individuals and families across Washington. Our integrated continuum of care ensures people receive treatment no matter where they are on their recovery journey.

Have you heard about “Frankenstein Opioids”?

Across the U.S. and beyond, health experts are raising alarms about a dangerous new class of synthetic opioids called nitazenes. Why are they being called Frankenstein Opioids? Because they’re incredibly potent, often created in illegal labs, and stitched into the drug supply in unpredictable ways.

To understand what makes nitazenes so dangerous and how communities can stay informed, check out our latest blog post on Frankenstein Opioids at https://triumphtx.org/frankenstein-opioids/

Did you know that mixing drugs is more dangerous than many people realize?

Overdose deaths from using more than one drug at the same time—like opioids mixed with m**h or cocaine—are increasing. In Washington, more people are dying from opioids combined with stimulants in recent years. Here’s why it’s risky:
🔹 Stimulants speed you up. They make your heart beat faster and raise your energy.
🔹 Opioids slow you down. They relax your body and slow breathing.

When these two kinds of drugs are taken together, they send confusing signals to your body. The stimulant pushes your heart to work harder, while the opioid slows your breathing. This mix can hide signs of overdose until it’s too late — and greatly increases the chance of a fatal outcome. [source:

Women’s History Month Spotlight: Marty Mann

In 1945, Marty Mann took a stand against the stigma surrounding alcohol use disorders, advocating for the understanding that addiction is a medical and psychological issue rather than a moral failing. She played a key role in founding the Yale School of Alcohol Studies (now at Rutgers) and organized the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency (NCADD).

Her groundbreaking message centered around three core ideas:
1. Alcohol use disorders are a disease.
2. People with alcohol use disorders can be helped and are worth helping.
3. Alcohol use disorders are a public health issue and our collective responsibility.

Today is a beautiful reminder to seize the day—not by rushing through it, but by being fully present in the moments that matter.
When we pause to breathe, notice, and appreciate the small things—sunlight through the window, a warm cup of coffee, a kind word —we give ourselves permission to slow down and truly experience life as it unfolds.

❤ Mindfulness turns ordinary moments into meaningful ones.
❤ Gratitude transforms what we have into enough.

Black History Month Spotlight: Chaney Allen

This month, we honor Chaney Allen, a pioneer in substance use disorder recovery and a voice for equity. She made history as the first African American woman to publish a recovery memoir, “I’m Black and I’m Sober”, highlighting the unique challenges Black women face in addiction.

Before gaining national attention, Allen worked as a counselor in underserved neighborhoods, creating safe spaces for those struggling with substance use disorders. Her advocacy laid the groundwork for more inclusive treatment systems, reminding us of the importance of culturally responsive care and accessible recovery for every community.

We celebrate Chaney Allen’s lasting impact on substance use disorder services and community health.
