Willie Gerald Vestal, 80, died peacefully Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Person Memorial Hospital. Born in Yadkin County, N.C., son of the late Willie Hayes Vestal & the late Odessa Reece Vestal. Mr. Vestal retired after approximately twenty-five years of service at various industrial laundries in North Carolina & Connecticut; he then continued to work as a consultant in the industrial laundry industry.

Mr. Vestal was past-president of the Grange Hall in Old Richmond, N.C.; he was also the past-chairman of Boy Scout Troop #946 in Old Richmond, N.C. where he loved to interact with the youth but most importantly with his sons Randy and Roger. He was also very proud & humble of his prior service as a volunteer member of the Forsyth County Rescue Squad.

Surviving is his loving & devoted wife of over sixty-one years Sadie Brewer Vestal of the home in Yanceyville; two sons, Randy G. Vestal of Yanceyville & Roger K. Vestal and wife, Virginia, of Timberlake, N.C.; one brother, Larry Vestal and wife, Patsy, of Germanton, N.C.; one sister, Colleen Poindexter and husband, David, of Mint Hill, N.C.

Private Graveside Rite will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, January 7, 2021 at the Vestal Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Graveside Rites at the cemetery 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM Thursday, January 7, 2021.

The family respectfully & humbly ask that – due to the COVID-19 Pandemic – anyone attending the services to please wear a mask, practice social distancing and use hand sanitizer.

In lieu of flowers, in remembrance of the late Mr. Vestal - a long-term survivor of stage-four kidney cancer, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

It is the sincere hope that a Remembrance Ceremony celebrating the life of Willie Gerald Vestal can be held later this year once circumstances return to normal and mass gatherings can be conducted safely.

Henry Thomas “Tom” Solomon, Jr., 75, of Yanceyville, NC, died peacefully surrounded by family and holding the hand of his loving wife, on Friday, November 13, 2020. A native and life-long resident of Caswell County, Tom was the son of the late Henry Thomas Solomon and Eva Gibson Solomon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mattie Solomon.

Tom was a beloved and faithful husband and father. He is survived by his wife of over 55 years, Jane Pruitt Solomon of the home, and son Thom Solomon and son-in-law Phillip Lanier of Bailey, NC.

He was affectionately known by his wife’s family as “Bubba Tom” and loved dearly, and he was given the nickname “Big Tom” by the family of the late Rob and Libba Walker, who were long-time neighbors and friends. Tom will be remembered for his integrity, humility and kindness, and for his service and example to others. He worked tirelessly to provide and care for his family. Tom found joy in a simple life, always family first, and gave generously of his time helping others and serving his community.

Tom attended Bartlett Yancey Senior High School. He worked for Caswell Motor Company starting at age 16 washing cars. Tom worked for the dealership for nearly 45 years as a mechanic and service manager. He retired from L.W. Hodges Service, Inc. in 2017.

Tom served on the Caswell Rescue Squad and the Yanceyville Volunteer Fire Department for more than 30 years. He was recognized as Volunteer Fireman of the Year in 1987.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday November 16, 2020 at Union United Methodist Church Cemetery in Leasburg, NC by Pastor Barry Solomon. Condolences may be offered to the family after the graveside service. The family requests that masks and social distancing be observed.

The family would like to thank the medical and palliative care teams of Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC, including the nurses on 4-West and 5-West, and the staff and nurses at Gibson House in Wentworth, NC, especially Donna and Karen. The family is grateful for Elizabeth, Aubrey (Jr.) and A.J. Fuqua for their unwavering support and care for Jane and Tom in recent years of declining health.

Michael Johnson Hunley, age 78, of Yanceyville passed away suddenly on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Sovah Danville Hospital with his precious, devoted and loving wife by his side. Born in Person County, he was the son of the late Ira Thomas Hunley and Ida Elton Gentry Hunley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Oliver and three brothers, Wayne Hunley, Donald Hunley and Duke Hunley. Mike was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to fish and enjoyed doing anything that allowed him to be outside.

Mike is survived by his loving wife of over 55 years, Nancy Fuqua Hunley of the home; his special fur friend, Max; his brother-in-law that he loved like a brother Junior Fuqua & wife Elizabeth of Yanceyville; two sister-in-laws Elaine Wood & husband Ray of Danville, Va.,Helen Anderson & husband Champe of Ringgold, Va.; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

In honoring Mike’s wishes, a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Rosie Kathleen Webster Bowes, age 95, passed away peacefully at her home, after several years of declining health. Rosie was born on January 9, 1925 in Leasburg, NC, to Flem Webster and Betty Hamlett Webster. She loved to laugh and was an avid gardener having grown many beautiful flowers. She loved working in the yard. In her younger years she enjoyed going to the beach and mountains. In her later years she was owner and operator of Penny’s Trading Post. Her most precious and rewarding calling was being a helpful, loving and devoted wife, mother & grandmother. Along with her husband she was a lifetime member of Beulah Baptist Church that was one of her most joyous places to spend time.

In addition to her parents Rosie was preceded in death by her loving husband of over seventy-two years, Lawrence William Bowes, one sister Viola Hicks, four brothers, Charlie Webster, LaGrand Webster, James Allen Webster, and Ivey Lester Webster.

She is survived by her children Neal Bowes (Phyllis) of Leasburg, William Lonnie Bowes (Barbara) of Leasburg, Elizabeth Karen Curl (Michael) of Greensboro. Rosie had eight grandchildren: Ronnie, Mike, Karen, Jenny, Tammy, Shawna, Kelly & Michelle, eleven great grandchildren: Kathryn, Brandon, Jarrad, Rebekah, Joseph, David, Carl, John Katie, Dylan & Elizabeth; and five great, great grandchildren: Lukas, Logan, Warren, Easton & Dixie also survive.

Graveside Rites will be held Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 11:00 am at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, 1834 US Hwy 158 E. Yanceyville, NC by Pastor Rev. Rick Lancaster. The family will receive friends at other times at the home.

Pallbearers will be: Kelly Curl – Dylan Sharpe – Joseph Potter – Carl Potter – John Potter – David Potter- Mike Bowes – Ronnie Bowes.

John Thomas Foster, 98, of Danville, VA passed away on October 5, 2020. Born in Caswell County, he was the son of the late Rufus Eddie Foster and Lillian Malloy Walker Foster. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Cline Foster; son, John Eddie Foster Sr.; brother, Rufus Leon Foster; and sisters, Maries Cross, and Bonito Heavy. John served in the United States Army during World War II and later began a career in Real Estate. He was the owner/operator of Foster Court Mobile Home Park in Yanceyville.

John is survived by his grandson John Eddie Foster, Jr. and wife Richelle and great grandchildren Autumn Foster and Hunter Foster.

Graveside services will be held at 10AM on Thursday, October 8, 2020 at Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery in Yanceyville, NC.

Ruth Lee Griggs Satterfield, 84, of Blanch, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Sunday, October 4, 2020. Born in Caswell County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Griggs and Rosa Eastwood Griggs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Inman; half-brother, Walter Griggs; and her loving husband of over 50 years, Reginald Satterfield. Ruth enjoyed singing, loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener. Another love of hers was cooking. She loved to cook for her family and her passion was evident in the food that she prepared. Above everything else, her favorite past time was spoiling all of her grand and great grandchildren. Her favorite thing to do was to be with her family and her greatest joy was to see them happy and all together. She was the hardest working woman ever known, from simple things in life to cutting her own wood for her wood stove. And boy did she like it hot in her house! Ruth was strong willed and determined, an amazing woman that will truly be missed.

Ruth leaves behind to cherish her memory one daughter, Emma Stallings of Blanch; sisters, Mary Inman of Mebane, Rosalla Barker and husband J.R. of Hillsville, VA, Mamie Ray and husband Larry of Graham; granddaughters, Jennifer Sims and husband Nay of Blanch, Stacey Saunders and husband Jason of Debary, FL and Tracey Killmer and husband David of Blanch; niece/granddaughter, Samantha Moorefield and husband Evan of Prospect Hill; and great grandchildren, Jonathan Sims, Jr., Ariana Kilmer, Hailey Saunders and Nathan Saunders.

At Ruth’s request, no services will be held.

Goodbye is not forever, goodbye is not the end. It simply means I’ll miss you until we meet again.

Mary Elizabeth (Lib) Long Cole, a resident of Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem passed away October 2nd after a year of declining health. She was born August 18, 1938, the daughter of William Taylor Long and Mabel Stephens Long of Semora, NC. Lib attended Bartlett Yancey High School in Yanceyville where she was an outstanding student leader and basketball star. She represented Caswell County in the Miss North Carolina pageant and went on to Salem College where she graduated in 1960 with a degree in Social Studies. Lib returned to Yanceyville where she was employed as a case worker in the Caswell County Department of Social Services.

Following her marriage to Jerry Cole in 1961, Lib devoted her life to the upbringing of three sons. She was a supportive wife, following her husband's transfers to Burlington, High Point, Hickory, Asheville, Wilmington and Charlotte. Lib was a loyal friend to anyone who needed her cooking, sewing, painting and a golf game. Always with a quick smile, Lib was ready to go dancing with The Lords & Ladies, the Hickory Cottillian and the Brigade of Guards. As an empty nester, she also enjoyed travelling with husband Jerry to Africa, Australia, Alaska, the Baltic, Western Europe and South America.

Lib was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Frances Long Josey, two brothers, William Taylor Long and James Monroe Long. She is survived by her husband, Jerry L. Cole and three sons, Thomas Carson Cole (Melissa), Tracey Stephens Cole (Sandra) and Kevin Patrick Cole and five grandchildren, Ben, Kallie, Taylor, Carson and Julianna Cole.

Due to the COVID-19 virus, the funeral will be private for the family at the Yanceyville Presbyterian Church.

Sylvia Crowder Williamson, 73, of Yanceyville, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2020. Born in Person County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Crowder, Sr. and Irene Irby Crowder. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death her brother, Robert Crowder, Jr. and nephew, Johnny Williamson. Sylvia loved to cook and take care of her family. She was to say the least a faithful wife that helped her husband Vernon with farming to***co and raising cows and stuck with him through thick and thin. She retired from North Village Pharmacy with over 44 years of service.

Sylvia is survived by her loving husband of over 54 years, Vernon Williamson of the home; two sons, Michael Williamson and wife Katina of Yanceyville and Brian Williamson and wife Melissa of Yanceyville; four grandchildren, Jordan Squires and wife Kim of Holly Springs, Bryzon Williamson of Yanceyville, Brooke Williamson of Yanceyville and Jordan Schoolfield of Yanceyville; three great grandchildren, Lincoln Squires, Nolan Squires and Karson Schoolfield; two nieces, Tracy Wright and husband Marty and Pam Crowder; one nephew, Troy Crowder; and brother-in-law John Williamson and wife Diane of Leasburg.

Graveside Rites will be held at 11AM on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at Union UMC Cemetery in Leasburg by Pastor Richard Rorrer and Vernon Massengill.

Funeral Services were held at Whiddon Shiver Funeral Home on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at 2:00 pm with Dr. Mark Brewer officiating. Funeral services will be held at 3PM on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at Shiloh Baptist Church in Milton, NC. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church after the service. Ms. Dunham was born on August 24, 1945 to the late Clifton Charlie Hamlett & Ruby Case in Danville, VA. She worked in the medical field and was a member of First Baptist Church of Thomasville. Michael “Mike” Writche Hooper of Providence, NC died unexpectedly on September 9, 2020. Born July 20, 1957 in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Florence S. Hooper. . In his youth he was active in Boy Scouts and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended the 1973 National Boy Scout Jamboree in Idaho. He graduated from Piedmont Academy in 1975 where he participated in various sports. In 1979, he graduated from Western Carolina University with a degree in Business Marketing and Management. He was the fourth-generation owner and operator of W.H. Hooper & Son, Inc. hardware store on the square in Yanceyville, NC. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and attained Black Belt status in Karate/Jiu-Jitsu.

Mike is survived by his son Jacob M. Hooper and wife Ashley; grandson Joshua J. Hooper; step grandchildren, Madison and Paisley Bray; brother, William C. “Chuck” Hooper and wife Marthann and their daughter Jennifer; uncle and aunt, Jack and Anne Hooper; aunts, Ola S. Willis and Helen S. Stainback; mother of his son, Joy W. Walker; and grandmother of his son, Margie Walton.

The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to Jim and Foy Chambers, Cindi Hooper Millay, Teresa Hooper Harding and Margie Walton.

Graveside services will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, September 13, 2020 at Yanceyville Town Cemetery (formerly Yanceyville UMC Cemetery) by Pastor Bob Paddock and Pastor Todd Hartley. Ina Ray Johnson Baker, 81, of Burlington passed away on August 21, 2020. Born in Cumberland County, NC, she was the daughter of the late James Arthur Johnson and Marion Margaret Fitchett Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of over 41 years, Jimmy Rogers Baker; three sisters, Melba Webster, Diane Russ and Joyce Garris; and one brother, Mayor James Johnson. Ina loved Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and was a selfless caregiver to everyone, especially her family and friends.

Ina is survived by her daughter Debbie Pruett of Burlington; two sisters, Betty Wagstaff of Graham and Shelia Ratley of Fayetteville; grandson, Noah Pruett of Burlington; niece, Tammy Jones and husband Wayne of Graham; nephew, Pastor Charlie Wagstaff and wife Fran of Graham; great nephew, Roger Jones III of Graham; great niece, Jennifer Ufret of Graham; and a host of nieces and nephew also survive.

A private service will be held by Pastor Marcus Barnes & Pastor Charlie Wagstaff. The family may be contacted for additional information.

Marian Faye Edwards, 83 of Mebane died unexpectedly Monday August 10, 2020 at home with her son and grandson tending to her. Born in Caswell County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Walters & Eunice Rimmer. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 31 years, James Lloyd Edwards and her stepson Jimmy Edwards.

Marian was a loving mother and wife who worked as a Clerk in our national defense industries. She was an avid gardener and loved to correspond with family and friends all over the country with letters and greeting cards. She loved to share stories with those close to her about her life and all the places she had been. A pioneering woman of her time, she studied International Studies at UNC Chapel Hill where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree after completing course work at Gardner-Webb. Marian read constantly, and always maintained a keen interest in what was happening in the world.

She is survived by her sister Judith Nelson of Burlington, NC, son Rob Baltes Jr. of Mebane, NC, daughter Suzanne (Samuel) Avichai of Evanston, IL, son David (Sarah) Brundage of Maine, stepdaughters Janie Edwards of Texas & Kathy (David) Decker of Texas, grandchildren Logan, Cecilia, Bethy, Anna & Libby and step grandchildren Casey, Blaine, Crystal and Sarah and numerous step great grandchildren.

Private services are being held at Wheeler’s Church by Reverend Rick Lancaster.
