I read today about the “disability closet” It’s a place where disabled professionals hide because they are concerned about the perception of their ability to “do the job” if they have a disability. Many disabilities are silent and without visible symptoms. I’ve experienced doubt and concern about sharing my disability. We must do better! I’ve personally found that having a disability has made me develop SUPER abilities that I might never have had otherwise. Our ability to thrive is what we should focus on!

I’ve been told many times that I’m a “Strong Woman” . I lived through a lot in this life. I’ve helped to raise 6 teenagers through young adulthood. I’ve been married and divorced twice- leaving behind step-kids that I loved and completely starting over from scratch on my own twice . I’ve been a young professional woman, competing against men twice my age. I’ve run more than 25 companies as Interim CEO, I’ve been a Partner at an International Consulting firm. My most precious and prized position is that of “Mom”. I’ve made many mistakes in my life, witnessed and endured by my two sons. I was paralyzed from the waist down overnight and taught myself to walk again. I’m the mother of a recovering addict. I’ve helped care for my two aging parents. Throughout all of this I’ve maintained a wicked sense of humor, become kinder and gentler with age. I’ve learned to hold my tongue (most of the time ) and I’ve learned that kindness and love are the most important things to have and freely share. While my strength is what most people comment on- it’s my vulnerability and weakness that I feel most. So strength? It comes from overcoming adversity, seemingly impossible odds. Failure and adversity are the best teachers.
