Sadly, the opioid crisis is nothing new. Addiction is something that has probably touched everyone's life in one way or another. And although acupuncture isn't a cure for addiction, more and more often it is recognized as a viable alternative to the use of prescription pain meds.

In my experience as an acupuncturist, acupuncture generally works very well and often better than prescription opiates and opioids because it not only works on physical aspects of pain, but the emotional aspects of pain too.

Below is a recent article from Forbes about this very thing!

Know where to find me? Through FB, my website www.pataphys.com, by phone at 717-846-8460, or come find me at 827 South George in York!

For years, acupuncture has been accepted as a holistic therapy to help in addiction treatment. According to recent writings, acupuncture may not treat addiction, but it can offer reprieve in the midst of the opioid epidemic.

Starting on February 1, The Sanctuary will join Alternative Therapies at 827 South George Street in York. Pretty much everything is staying the same other than the location! (Well...it'll be a lot quieter, warmer, and there will be parking)

It is still my hope that the Sanctuary will one day have walls of its own in York, and for now please continue to contact me through my personal page, Emily Sablosky Acupuncture or at 717-846-8460!

Acupuncture - in addition to being great at helping with pain and stress and host of other things - is GREAT for helping resolve colds and sinus infections. In the case of the latter, Chinese herbs (which I am licensed to prescribe and have on hand) are usually as beneficial as antibiotics, but without the many side effects that can come from using antibiotics, such as damaging the microbiome of the intestines and hindering your general immunity to other pathogens...which can often make you more prone to repeated infections.

In the case of sinus infections, acupuncture can also help with the pressure and congestion that comes along with them, in addition to helping with the general feeling of malaise, chest congestion that you might have, and loss of appetite. Additionally, many of the things that come along with an acupuncture treatment can leave you feeling much more full of energy and warm inside...which is important in these cold days!

Stay warm and be well...and I hope to see you soon for a treatment. Oh, and you don't have to wait to get sick or feel bad to come see me - acupuncture works best as a preventive form of medicine...so treat yourself to something that you'll be thankful for later!

Call anytime 717-846-8460 (or text 619-341-9195) or visit my website (www.pataphys.com) or(!) come see me at 58 South Beaver Street in Downtown Historic York!

Does acupuncture work? Is it real or do you have to believe in it to benefit from it?

Yes, of course acupuncture works! It is something that you should experience for yourself but it is an accepted form of treatment for many common ailments - including pain - by the National Institutes of Health, the Veteran's Administration, Walter Reed Hospital, and countless hospitals and clinics WORLDWIDE!

Many acupuncturists are skeptics at heart but maintain active practices because they have seen remarkable things as a result of the administration of acupuncture. Acupuncture really doesn't do well in the double-blind model because it's more of a procedure than anything else, and procedures are, by their nature, quite empirical!

If you would like to try acupuncture, or learn more about it, or get links to articles about its efficacy, call, message, or stop by The Sanctuary at 58 South Beaver Street in historic downtown York!

What kind of training and licensing do acupuncturists have? The easy answer is that it varies...but it's a lot!

In a few states there are no regulations, and in 43 states (of which Pennsylvania is one) and California, the minimum qualification to be able to sit for the four Oriental Medicine licensing exams (only one 8-hour exam in CA, though) is 2,625 hours of combined training at an accredited college in Western and Eastern medicine, Chinese Herbs and pharmacology, counseling and ethics, and supervised clinical practice. This schooling takes place over at least four years and most acupuncture programs require a minimum of 3,000-3,500 hours of training in total. In all of the states that license acupuncturists (except California) other certifications exist in Acupuncture and Herbology, which require only three exams and a minimum of 1,905 hours of training. All Licensed Acupuncturists, regardless of certification level, are required to complete more than 50 hours of continuing education every four years (two in California) in order to maintain their license.

The national licensing body is the National Certification Committee for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (regulated by each state individually) In California it's the California Acupuncture Board which is regulated by the Department of Consumer Affairs.

This article describes some of the issues with our over-reliance on antibiotics and also gives hope to other options we have. Preventative medicine - like acupuncture - is one, and remedies such as those prescribed by a licensed practitioner of Oriental Medicine is another.

If you would like to learn more about how you can build your immune system and safely treat infection without the use of antibiotics, call, send a message, or stop in to The Sanctuary at 58 South Beaver street in historic downtown York!

What is an acupuncture treatment like? For your first appointment you will fill out a little bit of paper work, and then your acupuncturist will ask you questions about your medical concerns in order to get more information about the nature of your issue or issues in order to determine a diagnosis and treatment plan. Like any other medical office, everything you talk about is confidential. The treatment itself consists of inserting fine needles - hair thin and barely able to be felt on insertion - into points on the body which are located by palpating spaces near anatomical landmarks. The needles will be retained for 25-30 minutes as you lay clothed on a comfortable table. Usually people experience deep relaxation during this time and sometimes even fall asleep! At the end of the treatment, you'll get a short (5-10 minute) massage on your neck, hands, feet, back, or legs depending on the reason why you've come in.
Call, send a message, or stop by the Sanctuary at 58 South Beaver Street in Historic Downtown York to learn more or get to know us! We look forward to meeting you!

You may wonder how acupuncture is beneficial or if it's for you. Many people use acupuncture as a form of preventative medicine, for sub-clinical complaints like a common cold, sore throat, chronic pain, stress, and sleep disorders, just to name a few things. Together with other aspects of Chinese Medicine, which encompasses the use of individualized herbal prescriptions, acupuncture is also great for treating menstrual disorders, fertility, the management of many auto-immune disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, and dermatological concerns...again, just to name a few! Call, message, or stop by The Sanctuary at 58 South Beaver Street in York to learn more!
