Mental Health in the Workplace Matters โ For Everyone.
Employees donโt leave their stress, grief, anxiety, or personal struggles at the door when they walk into work. For many adults, the workplace is where they spend most of their timeโmaking it a powerful and important setting for support, connection, and prevention. Prioritizing mental health in the workplace isnโt just good for employees; itโs essential to building strong organizations, a healthy workforce, and resilient communities.
WHAT CAN EMPLOYERS DO?
There are many meaningful ways employers can support mental health at work:
Offer comprehensive benefits and EAPs. Review insurance plans to ensure employees have access to mental health and substance use disorder services. Just as importantโhelp employees understand how to access and use these benefits year-round, not only during open enrollment.
๐ Review workplace policies and practices. Taking time to ensure policies are current, supportive, and responsive to employee needs can make a real difference in creating a mentally healthy work culture.
๐ Increase education and awareness. Many employees arenโt aware of the mental health supports available to them. Regular communication helps ensure no one feels alone or uninformed.
๐ Normalize conversations about mental health. Offering trainings, lunch-and-learns, and ongoing su***de prevention education creates space for open dialogue. Research shows that when someone struggling with suicidal thoughts has the opportunity to talk openly, they often feel relief and are more likely to seek help.
TRAINING AND PREVENTION EFFORTS MATTER.
Programs like VitalCog: Su***de Prevention in the Workplace, offered by the Ohio Su***de Prevention Foundation, help organizations recognize warning signs, support employees, and promote mental well-being.
When workplaces invest in mental health, they invest in peopleโand that can save lives.
