You’ve probably seen a Noodle golf ball in the rough while looking for your Pro V1 or Chromesoft. Maybe you’ve even hit one just for fun. But did you know the ball is named after a real person?
Tom “Noodle” Lawrence, who passed away this month at age 69, wasn’t a tour pro or a gear rep. He was just a good man who loved golf—and once played a round at Pebble Beach that would unexpectedly change the game forever.
During that round, Tom was paired with a novice golfer who appreciated his tips, patience, and personality. After 18 holes, the man turned to him and said:
“Thanks for your help, Noodle. I’m the Marketing Manager for Wilson Sporting Goods. Would you mind if I licensed the rights to your nickname?”
Tom said yes. And that’s how the Noodle golf ball got its name—not from a branding agency, but from a guy with a great nickname and a kind heart.
Tom lived in Youngstown, Ohio his whole life. He loved skiing, snowmobiling, and long camping trips in Montana. He was a regular at his local YMCA for 50 years. And without ever knowing it, he became a legend in the golf world.
We might never put a Noodle in play during a qualifier—but next time you find one, maybe smile and remember the man behind it.
RIP Noodle. You left your mark on the game—literally. 🕊️
