In 2005 I combined my experience as a billing manager for a large, medical billing company to found Preferred Medical Services (PMS). As PMS' President, I help provide the vision for the company's development of integrated billing solutions that add value to the health care organizations we serve. I am responsible for keeping Preferred Medical Services and our clients up to date with the changes in insurance carrier requirements, coding and Federal/State regulations while maintaining relationships with our key contacts. Our client's and vendors success is critical to the operational goals of Preferred Medical Services. It is through our clients that we help improve the lives of people in our community. The goal of our clients is to provide the best patient care available. At Preferred Medical Services we help our clients achieve that goal by letting them focus on the one most important element of their practice, the health and well being of their patients. Our annual goals are to monitor and minimize days in AR, increase cash flow, and improve the overall revenue cycle management of the provider's practices.

Copays, Coinsurances, and Deductibles: What are They, and How do They Impact You?

Deductible vs. Copay? Copay vs. Coinsurance? What's the difference? The more your patients understand how their plan works, the better they'll be able to plan for your medical costs, both large and small. No doubt most of your patients have every desire and intention to pay, though they either need help understanding their invoice or currently need the financial means to.

As the financial liability shifts more and more to the patients, the best way to reduce your vulnerability of uncompensated care is to expedite the collection of your patients' responsibility — copay, coinsurance, and deductible. People are unlikely to fork over their hard-earned money if they don't understand where it is going or why they are responsible for such a considerable amount. Good luck finding anyone, even trained professionals, who don't see medical bills to be complicated these days.

When verifying benefits for your patients, we recommend that a staff member ensures their patient understands their benefits and financial responsibility. Therefore, when the patient receives your invoice or is asked for their copay, coinsurance, or deductible during their visit, your patient will feel confident and more than happy to pay.
