Glutathione is one of the most important compounds your body makes naturally, yet it’s often overlooked. It’s a simple molecule built from three amino acids: cysteine, glycine, and glutamine, but its role in the body is anything but simple.
What makes glutathione so powerful is its sulfur content. Sulfur acts almost like a magnet, helping bind and carry out unwanted substances like toxins and heavy metals, along with neutralizing free radicals that can create stress in the body.
Under normal conditions, your body is able to recycle glutathione efficiently. It works alongside other antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, and alpha lipoic acid, passing off and neutralizing oxidative stress in a continuous cycle. Glutathione is the final step in that process, helping “reset” and regenerate those antioxidants so they can keep doing their job.
But when the body is overwhelmed—whether from increased toxin exposure, stress, or overall demand, glutathione stores can become depleted. When that happens, the body has a harder time keeping up with detoxification, immune support, and protection against oxidative stress.
The good news is there are ways to support your body’s natural production and recycling of glutathione.
Supplements that support glutathione levels include liposomal glutathione, N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), alpha lipoic acid, methylation
support nutrients like folate, B6, and B12, selenium, vitamin C, and milk thistle.
You can also support glutathione through your diet by focusing on sulfur-rich foods. Garlic, onions, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, and watercress are all excellent choices to incorporate regularly.
