Stress and attachment anxiety have predicted emotional eating through rumination in adolescent girls (Schmitt et al., 2021).

You can try to avoid emotional eating habits (or help your daughter avoid these habits) by reducing stress.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness recommends these ways to reduce stress:

Accept your needs
Manage your time
Practice relaxation (deep breathing, meditation, etc.)
Exercise daily
Set aside time for yourself
Eat well
Get enough sleep
Talk to someone

What is ~ fat talk~ and why is it important to recognize?

Fat talk includes any form of negative talk centered on weight and body shape. These comments can be made towards yourself or towards others.

Whether these remarks are well-intentioned or not, they still have negative outcomes. Comments like,
“I wish I looked like you. I’m so fat.”
“I feel fat today!”
“I shouldn’t have eaten that. I’m so gross,”
put unnecessary and negative attention on people’s bodies.

This type of dialogue has become normalized, particularly among women and girls. Even a single comment about one’s body can change their self-perception. Fat talk attracts unwelcome attention to parts of your body that you may be self-conscious about, leading to increased body dissatisfaction and a negative body image which may increase the risks of anxiety, depression, unhealthy dieting, and disordered eating.
