Why do we have Black Breastfeeding Week?

Here’s why:

Black Breastfeeding Week was created because of the long-standing racial disparities seen in breastfeeding rates. CDC data shows that 75% of white women versus 58.9% of black women have ever breastfed.

The B*W website states, “The fact that racial disparity in initiation and even bigger one for duration has lingered for so long is reason enough to take 7 days to focus on the issue.”

Visit our website for a breakdown of the top 5 reasons why we need B*W:

This week, we will be sharing our support for *W20 on all our social media channels! Follow us for updates!

Did you know Los Angeles is home to the largest Asian American population in the U.S.? The Asian Pacific Islander Breastfeeding Task Force recognizes the cultural and educational needs of new parents and aims to improve breastfeeding education and support practices by removing barriers that prevent those who are breastfeeding from flourishing.

Today begins Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Breastfeeding Week!

When did formula start becoming a cultural norm instead of breastfeeding? Asian culture has long valued the countless benefits of breastfeeding -- for the newborn baby and the new mother -- so why the push for modernized formula on mothers able and willing to breastfeed?

"For many South Asian families, formula feeding is perceived as the modern, westernized and superior infant feeding method"

How Lactation Experts Are Working To Redefine and Decolonize Breastfeeding

"Feeding your children from your own body can benefit the baby’s overall nutrition and immune system, but through the course of history, the right to do so has often been denied Black and Indigenous people who give birth. "

Breastfeeding or bodyfeeding can benefit a baby’s overall nutrition. Often the right to do so is denied to Black and Indigenous people.

Native Breastfeeding Week has evolved into Indigenous Milk Medicine Week inspired by a collective of Native women. The theme, “Nourishing Our Futures” helps represent the power and respect of the medicine provided for the people.

“We believe that breast milk doesn’t just nurture babies, it conveys a mother’s life story, including her knowledge and culture,” explains Amanda Singer, president of the Navajo Nation Breastfeeding Coalition. “Breast milk makes babies strong and healthy, so that they’re ready to face the challenges of their tomorrows,” Singer adds, validating the importance of breastfeeding in Native American communities.

Why do we care about breastfeeding education?

Our goal is to improve the health of mothers and newborns by teaching parents and health providers how to improve, prevent, or manage over 25 common prenatal and postpartum breast and breastfeeding related concerns.

Yes. That cover photo is a Lactation Simulation Model (LSM). No. It is NOT a real person. I know...it looks very real.

That’s the point.

We create realistic, wearable LSMs in four skin tones to ensure that medical and and nursing students, hospital staff, lactation experts, and parents are confident in their breastfeeding management skills.
