Every woman who has been pregnant has experienced significant changes to her body; specifically to her core, pelvic floor, hips, back, and ribs. Since these are the foundation of her frame, these changes can also impact her shoulders, neck, knees and feet. While she will notice many of these changes immediately, some of the secondary changes may take years to manifest.
Women commonly experience back, hip or pelvic pain and often have urinary leakage or hesitancy postpartum. They can also experience changes in their bowels or increased risk of prolapse postpartum, a risk that can worsen without proper management.
Unfortunately, many OB/GYN’s and primary care providers lack understanding of the pelvic floor, and the dramatic difference therapy can make for their patients long term.
There is so much more to pelvic floor therapy than kegels for incontinence!
Pelvic floor therapists assess how a patient moves, how the upper core communicates with the lower, and how it handles off-loading. They look at rib position over the pelvis and its impact on posture & stability with functional activities. They assess how the patient functionally manages intra-abdominal pressure, and use internal assessment of the pelvic floor muscles to assess strength, pain, and any prolapse.
The pelvic floor is a hammock for our organs. When we consider that this hammock supports a rapidly growing baby human nine months, and the incredible stretching the muscles, fascia, & skin undergo, it's easy to see why some experience these struggle after birth.
Pelvic Floor Therapists are uniquely qualified to help women have a successful return to optimal function by teaching appropriate pressure management, increase muscle strength, restore appropriate muscle balance, and train functional tissue loading. They have an in-depth knowledge of how the core and pelvic floor interact to provide stability, reduce pain, and prevent future injuries.
