What an amazing opportunity for parents of AAC users in our area, to experience! I would highly recommend attending if you can!

This is a shout out for Krista Howard! She was a complete boss last week and delivered a 2 1/2 day training with myself and Brandi Lee Wentland in Las Vegas to a group of 160 educators. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive toward having her there and her input being invaluable. Today I sent her a message telling her that Alta Regional center approved our HCBS grant for her to come to California and help share her story with parents of non-speaking children in the Yuba-Sutter area. More details to come! I’ll update you all. She is also presenting at CSHA with us next March for the first time. Fun things ahead! 😀🎉

Krista is the first full-time AAC user to become a Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA). She graduates with her bachelors degree in education next year.

So true. 🥹

It’s pretty well known that Autism is frequently missed in girls - but did you know that while that’s absolutely true, that kids (and adults!) who are missed and misdiagnosed still present with the same core differences?

1️⃣ Differences in language
2️⃣ Differences in socialization
3️⃣ Differences in interests, routines, and sensory processing

But it IS true that the differences in these areas often present in non-stereotypical ways, AND anxiety and sensory differences are often the most prevalent differences in girls, people who are AFAB, and many boys who present this way too (it’s not specific to girls!).

Knowing one is Autistic can have significant positive impact on a person - so YES, even though they present as “quirky”, having a diagnosis can be very helpful. Additionally understanding their brain and that they are Autistic, what that means, and how their brain works can be life changing!

This is why I wrote my Autism Handbook for Kids- so kids can learn about their brain, increase their self-esteem, and set them up to self-advocate! It releases Wednesday, and will be on sale for the first few days, so be sure to snag it on my website right away! Www.mrsspeechiep.com

Great reminder that the well-intentioned and widely used phrase “use your words” is not actually helpful or effective in getting a child to use their words.
