Look at that happy and beautiful face!

It's disappointing to see our Florida State Representative Randy Maggard vote to advance a bill (HB 601) that would allow Optometrists to do glaucoma and other laser surgeries. Yag Capsulotomy is one such procedure.

Louisiana passed similar legislation with disastrous results. The Yag Laser Capsulotomy is something I do 350 times a year. It’s never an emergency surgery. There’s a laser within 30 minutes of every Floridian. There's no shortage. Letting non-MD's do this delicate surgery is a very bad idea.

This lady had permanent damage with optometrist done surgery when the Louisiana passed legislation similar to SB 876/HB 601. Think the optometrist had the same mal-practice limits as a physician?

Meet Charlotte from Texas. She was told by an optometrist that she required “minor” laser surgery to correct a problem with her vision. Instead of being referred to an ophthalmologist (a medical doctor and surgeon) near her home, her optometrist had her travel six hours to a neighboring state—one of only four states in the U.S. that allow optometrists to perform this surgery. Charlotte is an unfortunate example how good people with real lives can get hurt. Optometrists are a valued member of the eye care team, but they are not medical doctors or trained surgeons. Today began the third phase keeping everyone safe fro COVID-19.

We started with enhanced screenings, full time masks, reduced waiting room crowds. Then came UV disenfection systems.

Today, Dr. Mahootchi got the vaccine as we work make it available to all our staff.
