👀 We get asked this all the time:
“Can HIV be cured?”
Short answer? Not yet.
Long answer? Science is making massive progress, and people with HIV can already live completely normal lives thanks to modern treatment.

🧪 "What’s the Difference Between a Cure and Treatment?"

A "treatment" helps control a disease. A "cure" makes it go away completely.
Right now, HIV is treatable, but not curable yet.

The current treatment is called "Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)". It works by:
- Stopping HIV from making copies of itself
- Lowering the virus in your blood to "undetectable levels"
- Protecting your immune system
- Preventing HIV from being passed to others during s*x

People on ART can live "long, full lives" working, studying, dating, having kids, and more

Here’s the tricky part:

You don’t catch HIV by accident. Let’s bust the biggest myths and talk about how this virus moves from one person to another!

HIV can be transmitted through specific body fluids:
- Blood
- Semen
- Vaginal fluids
- Re**al fluids
- Breast milk

These fluids must come into direct contact with:
- A mucous membrane (like the ge****ls, re**um, or inside the mouth)
- Damaged tissue (like cuts or open wounds)
- The bloodstream (like through a needle)

👉 So yes, you can get HIV by:
- Having unprotected s*x
- Sharing needles or syringes
- Receiving unscreened blood transfusions (very rare today)
During childbirth or breastfeeding (if the mother is HIV-positive)
- Using unsterilized tattoo/piercing tools

👉 Ways HIV Cannot Be Transmitted:
Time to clear the air — here’s what does NOT cause HIV:
🚫 Hugging or kissing
🚫 Sharing food, cups, or cutlery
🚫 Toilet seats or public pools
🚫 Shaking hands or touching someone
🚫 Coughing or sneezing
🚫 Mosquitoes or insect bites
🚫 Sharing showers or gym equipment
📌 HIV is not spread through casual contact. You can’t “catch” HIV from being friends, working with, or going to school with someone who is HIV positive!

🦠HIV - The Silent Invader

What exactly is HIV, and why should you care?

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It’s a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, specifically targeting CD4 cells, which are white blood cells that help fight off infections (HIV.gov). When HIV destroys too many of these cells, the body becomes vulnerable to all kinds of illnesses—even those that wouldn’t normally be a threat.

If left untreated, HIV can progress to AIDS—Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. This is the final stage of HIV, when the immune system is badly damaged and the body can no longer defend itself. But here’s the good news: with proper treatment (called antiretroviral therapy), people with HIV can live long, healthy lives and never develop AIDS (CDC).

What Happens Inside the Body?

➡️Entry: HIV enters the body through infected bodily fluids—more about this in our next post. Once inside, the virus travels through the bloodstream looking for CD4 cells to infect.
➡️Attack: HIV attaches itself to a CD4 cell using special surface proteins, allowing it to enter the cell (NIH – How HIV Infects Cells).
➡️Hijack: Once inside, HIV takes control of the cell’s machinery and forces it to produce copies of the virus. It’s like hacking a factory and making it produce enemy robots.
➡️Destroy: The infected CD4 cell is eventually destroyed, releasing new copies of HIV into the bloodstream—ready to infect more CD4 cells (Avert.org – How HIV Works).
➡️Weakened Defense: Over time, as more CD4 cells are destroyed and not replaced, the immune system weakens. This can take 8–10 years without treatment. At this stage, the body becomes vulnerable to "opportunistic infections"—diseases that wouldn’t normally harm a person with a healthy immune system (World Health Organization).

💉How is HIV Treated?

While there's no cure yet, HIV can be controlled with Antiretroviral Therapy (ART). ART is a combination of medicines that must be taken every day. It doesn’t kill the virus, but it stops it from making more copies of itself, which keeps your immune system strong.

ART treatment:

✅Lowers HIV levels to undetectable levels, so it doesn’t damage the immune system
✅Helps people with HIV live normal, healthy lives
✅When HIV becomes undetectable, it cannot be passed to others during s*x – a fact known as U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable)(CDC – HIV Treatment Overview)
Just think of ART like locking the virus in a box, throwing away the key, and stopping it from hurting the body or anyone else.
