BREAKING: Seventh Patient Declared HIV-Free After Stem Cell Transplant — Even Without the CCR5 Mutation
A man being treated for blood cancer has become the seventh known person to be declared HIV-free following a stem cell transplant — marking another promising step in the decades-long search for a true HIV cure.
What makes this case extraordinary is that the donor stem cells did NOT carry the rare CCR5-Δ32 mutation, a genetic variant previously believed to be essential for blocking HIV from entering cells.
For years, scientists assumed this mutation was the “secret ingredient” behind past cures. But this patient’s recovery challenges that belief — suggesting that HIV may be curable even without genetically resistant donor cells.
According to Christian Gaebler of the Free University of Berlin, this breakthrough widens the pool of potential donors, removing a major barrier that has limited HIV cure research for years.
While stem cell transplants are still far too risky to be used as routine HIV treatment, every successful case brings researchers closer to understanding how the virus can be fully eliminated from the body — paving the way for safer, scalable, and more accessible therapies in the future.
