OUCRU is a large-scale clinical and public health research organisation in Asia.

The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit with site offices in Viet Nam, Indonesia, and Nepal. Part of the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health at the University of Oxford (UK), OUCRU was first established in Ho Chi Minh City in 1991, hosted by the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD), Viet Nam. In 2003, OUCRU-NP was established in Kathmandu, Nepal, hosted by Patan Hospital and the Patan Academy of Health Sciences. OUCRU Hanoi was established in 2006 in partnership with the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases (NHTD), Viet Nam. In 2008, the Eijkman-Oxford Clinical Research Unit (EOCRU) was established in Jakarta, Indonesia, in partnership with the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology and Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia. Our vision is to have a local, regional and global impact on health by leading a locally-driven research programme on infectious diseases in Southeast Asia. Our research programme covers clinical and laboratory research with hospital and community-based patient populations, including epidemiology, immunology, host and pathogen genetics, molecular biology, microbiology and virology, mathematical modelling, bioinformatics, and biostatistics. This work is supported by an extensive clinical trials unit and data management centre compliant with national and international regulations and comprehensive management, finance, and administrative support offices. OUCRU receives considerable support from Wellcome Trust as part of the Africa and Asia Programmes. Together with our partners, we have led a highly successful effort in enhancing the infrastructure and capacity to perform clinical trials and basic scientific research in Viet Nam, Indonesia, and Nepal.

Tập đầu tiên của chính thức quay trở lại với một chủ đề "Sốt xuất huyết" quen thuộc nhưng được kể theo một "kịch bản" hoàn toàn mới 💻

Lần này, con người được mô phỏng như một hệ điều hành máy tính, nơi các triệu chứng bệnh hoạt động giống như một chiếc máy tính bị “nhiễm virus”:
🤒 Sốt cao → Tăng nhiệt độ máy tính
😪 Mệt mỏi, uể oải → Treo máy, rối loạn hoạt động
🤮 Nôn, có thể xung huyết nhẹ → "Nôn" ra nhiều cửa sổ và file

Nhiệm vụ của nhân viên IT I-Sà là phải tìm cách “cứu” hệ điều hành khỏi loại virus nguy hiểm này! Sốt xuất huyết Dengue không phải là một chủ đề mới của nhưng video lần này mang đến một cách tiếp cận mới mẻ biến những triệu chứng quen thuộc thành một câu chuyện công nghệ dễ hiểu, sinh động và gần gũi hơn với mọi người.

OUCRU was pleased to deliver the short course “Modelling and Analysis of Serological Data” from 17–20 November, welcoming 28 participants from Vietnam and abroad. As part of the project Developing Advanced Tools to Detect Emerging Viral Threats, the course—led by world-leading experts from Imperial College London and National University of Singapore with support from OUCRU’s Mathematical Modelling and Emerging Infections group,—combined lectures, practical sessions, and groupwork on real serological datasets.

This short course represents an important commitment of OUCRU and its partners to advancing modelling capacity in the region, and improving our understanding about emerging viral threats.

Kháng Kháng Sinh luôn là chủ đề được Collab Lab quan tâm hàng đầu. Qua 3 năm thực hiện dự án, các bạn trẻ đam mê khoa học của Collab Lab đã thành công truyền tải nhiều khía cạnh khác nhau của lĩnh vực Kháng Kháng Sinh thông qua video vui nhộn, sử dụng ngôn ngữ gần gũi với thanh thiếu niên.

Bệnh lao là một trong những bệnh truyền nhiễm gây tử vong hàng đầu trên thế giới. Năm 2023, có khoảng 10,8 triệu người mắc bệnh lao và 1,25 triệu người tử vong. Việt Nam nằm trong nhóm các quốc gia có gánh nặng bệnh lao cao, với khoảng 182.000 ca mắc mới năm 2023, tương đương 182 ca/100.000 dân. (Báo cáo Lao toàn cầu của WHO, 2024).

👏 Nhóm Nghiên cứu Lao tại OUCRU vừa được trao nguồn tài trợ trị giá 3,8 triệu bảng Anh từ Quỹ Wellcome Trust nhằm xác định các chỉ dấu sinh học và tế bào liên quan đến tiến triển bệnh và kết quả điều trị ở bệnh lao phổi và lao màng não.

Nghiên cứu sẽ theo dõi hơn 3.500 người bệnh tại Việt Nam trong vòng 6 năm nhằm:
1️⃣ Xác định các dấu ấn sinh học mới để theo dõi điều trị.
2️⃣ Tìm ra mục tiêu mới cho liệu pháp điều trị hướng vào vật chủ.
3️⃣ Xây dựng cơ sở dữ liệu tích hợp toàn diện – nguồn tài nguyên quý giá phục vụ cho các nghiên cứu hệ thống và y học chính xác trong bệnh lao.

Việc hiểu rõ cơ chế bệnh và phục hồi ở cấp độ phân tử sẽ giúp theo dõi điều trị hiệu quả hơn, phát triển các liệu pháp điều trị chính xác hơn.

Dự án sẽ được dẫn dắt bởi PGS TS Nguyễn Thụy Thương Thương, TS Lê Thanh Hoàng Nhật tại OUCRU, cùng các đồng nghiệp tại Đại học Oxford và Viện Francis Crick (Vương quốc Anh).

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases. In 2023, about 10.8 million people became ill with TB, and around 1.25 million died from it. Vietnam continues to be among the countries with a high TB burden, reporting approximately 182,000 new cases (182 per 100,000 population) in 2023 (WHO Global TB Report 2024).

👏 Tuberculosis research team at OUCRU and colleagues have received a £3.8 million Wellcome Discovery Award to investigate the molecular determinants of pathogenesis and treatment outcomes in both pulmonary and meningeal TB.

The research will follow 3,500 patients in Vietnam for 6 years to:
1️⃣ Identify new biomarkers for treatment monitoring.
2️⃣ Discover novel targets for host-directed therapies.
3️⃣ Build an integrated database to support future TB research, which serves as a vital resource for future systems biology and precision medicine research in TB.

Understanding how disease and recovery work at the molecular level will help us monitor treatment more effectively and develop more precisely targeted therapies.

The six-year project is led by Associate Professor Nguyễn Thụy Thương Thương, Dr Lê Thanh Hoàng Nhật at OUCRU, in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Oxford and Francis Crick Institute (UK).

OUCRU Hanoi was proud to take part in the D**g Thap General Hospital Scientific and Technical Conference 2025.
Prof. Rogier van Doorn delivered a plenary talk on antimicrobial resistance, while Dr Vu Thi Lan Huong presented OUCRU Hanoi’s work and chaired a session. Together, they highlighted OUCRU’s commitment to advancing research collaboration and strengthening Vietnam’s health research capacity.

15 nhà nghiên cứu thuộc chương trình MODRA Khóa 2 vừa hoàn thành khóa tập huấn chuyên sâu, chuẩn bị cho việc đưa ý tưởng nghiên cứu vào thực tiễn.

Khóa học trang bị các kỹ năng thiết yếu như thuyết trình và quản lý dự án, giúp họ cạnh tranh giành được nguồn vốn hạt giống lên đến 30.000 USD để triển khai dự án nghiên cứu kéo dài 12 tháng. Các học viên cũng được hướng dẫn cách quản lý dự án sau tài trợ hiệu quả và minh bạch.

“Chúng tôi muốn các học viên được trải nghiệm toàn bộ chu trình nghiên cứu – từ phát triển ý tưởng đến quản lý một dự án thực tế,” Tiến sĩ Leigh Jones, Giám đốc MODRA, chia sẻ.

💡MODRA (MORU–OUCRU Discovery Research Academy) là chương trình do Quỹ Wellcome Trust tài trợ, nhằm trao quyền cho các nhà nghiên cứu tiềm năng đến từ Nam và Đông Nam Á để phát triển sự nghiệp và tạo ra tác động tích cực cho sức khỏe toàn cầu.

15 early- and mid-career researchers from MODRA Cohort 2 have just completed an intensive training designed to turn bold ideas into real-world impact.

Over the course, participants sharpened their pitching and project management skills as they prepared to compete for seed grants of up to USD 30,000 to launch their 12-month research projects. They also learned essential tools for effective and transparent post-grant management, a key step toward leading independent research.

“We want participants to experience the full research cycle - from developing a strong idea to managing a real project,” said Dr Leigh Jones, MODRA Director.

💡 (MORU–OUCRU Discovery Research Academy) is a Wellcome Trust funded programme to empower rising researchers from South and Southeast Asia to navigate their careers and drive global health impact.

As a Wellcome Trust Programme, we have received considerable support from the Wellcome Trust since our establishment in 1991.
