Every year about 120.000 babies are born premature in Vietnam. According to some studies about half don't survive. In the other half about 75-80% develop ROP, or Retinitis of Prematuritas. Again, of this group a sizable number go blind in the first few months of their lives. With earlier diagnosis and proper treatment a substantial number of ROP patients can avoid blindness. Therefore money needs to be invested in modern digital imaging, treatment equipment (like lasers) and training of local doctors to work with this equipment.
