Pre-Hospital Care development is a priority in the Pacific.

We share this story from PNG featuring Dr Arabella Koliwan , an fantastic leader, dedicated to developing Emergency Care in PNG.

St John Global Leadership Development Programme.

Dr Koliwan was a featured presenters at the 2025 PISEC Meeting in FIJI.

Arabella Koliwan is an emergency physician and ambulance executive dedicated to strengthening emergency care and ambulance services for the people of Papua New Guinea. She has been engaged with National St John Ambulance PNG for five years, including three years as a volunteer and just over two years in the senior leadership team. In her current role, she works across operations, clinical governance, and strategy to ensure ambulance services remain reliable, patient-centred, and responsive to community needs.

Arabella brings experience in executive leadership, frontline service delivery, and health systems strengthening, with a particular focus on improving service readiness in challenging and remote settings.

She is currently leading work on exploring solar and other alternative energy solutions for ambulance stations to improve reliability of power, reduce operating costs, and support climate-resilient services. Arabella looks forward to the St John Leadership Development Program as an opportunity to deepen her leadership practice, amplify the impact of her work, and help shape a resilient, modern ambulance service that Papua New Guinean communities can trust and rely on.

Faces of Emergency Care in the Pacific.

This month we share the Emergency Department at Pohnpei State Hospital in Pohnpei, FSM. Thank you Dr Ratu Cakobau.

These are some of the frontline clinicians and staff caring for patients who arrive sick, injured or afraid.

They form an important part of the growing Pacific emergency care community.

We are citizens of the BLUE CONTINENT.

Primary Trauma Care (PTC) has become one of the most important trauma training stories in the Pacific. It has grown from a single course into a truly regional effort led by Pacific clinicians, for Pacific health systems.

Primary Trauma Care, has shown that when we invest in simple, context‑appropriate training and empower local faculty, we not only improve trauma care today, we also grow the next generation of Pacific emergency and critical care leaders.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of PTC, a powerful reminder of how a simple, practical trauma course has grown alongside the needs of low‑ and middle‑income countries, including our Pacific Island nations. You can read more about this journey in the article linked below, and we’ll be sharing more updates on recent PTC courses and Pacific faculty stories in the coming weeks.

A big shout out to our PTC Trainers in the Pacific and thank you to development partners that have made this possible.

Dr Deepak Sharma considers himself fortunate that he has been able to learn and deliver learning to others in Fiji and the Pacific as part of his training.
