A One Health perspective on Samoa’s health system
When we talk about strengthening Samoa’s health system, we must take a One Health approach and look at the total health capacity of the country, not just what sits inside government hospitals.
Today, the private sector is already a significant part of our national health system. It now provides at least:
- around 20 GP practices
- 2 physiotherapy services
- 4 ultra*ound services
- 1 CT scan
- 1 mammogram service
- 2 Xrays
- 1 echocardiogram
- 2 diagnostic laboratories
- 8 pharmacies
- medical/nursing home visits
This capacity is already helping diagnose disease earlier, manage chronic illnesses, support maternal health, and reduce pressure on our public hospitals.
Health planning that looks only at government facilities risks duplication, inefficiency, and missed opportunities. A One Health approach means counting everything we already have, planning across public and private sectors, and using limited public funds wisely to fill real gaps — not recreate existing services.
The issue is not public versus private.
The real issue is equitable access to quality care for all Samoans, wherever that care is delivered.
If we plan properly, coordinate better, and work together, Samoa’s health system will be stronger, fairer, and more sustainable for the future.
