Ministry of Health Strengthens Communication Capacity through Behaviour Change Communication Workshop on Sexual and Reproductive Health.

The Ministry of Health successfully conducted a three-day Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) Workshop on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) from 25–27 March 2026, as part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening public health communication and improving health outcomes across Samoa.

This important initiative was delivered in partnership with Australia ABC International Development (ABCID), with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Government of Samoa.

The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and practical skills in designing and implementing effective communication strategies and tools that promote positive health behaviours. Key focus areas included:

- Sexual and reproductive health and rights
- Family planning awareness and services
- Prevention and response to gender-based violence

Participants were equipped with practical approaches to develop targeted, culturally appropriate communication products that support increased awareness, improved service uptake, and strengthened community engagement particularly among youth and vulnerable populations.

The training brought together a diverse group of stakeholders involved in SRH programming, including representatives from relevant Ministry of Health divisions, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations. This multi-sectoral approach reflects the importance of collaboration in addressing complex public health challenges and ensuring inclusive access to essential health services.

Through initiatives such as this, the Ministry of Health continues to prioritise the delivery of accessible, equitable, and high-quality sexual and reproductive health services for all Samoans.

The Ministry extends its sincere appreciation to ABC International Development, UNFPA, and all partners for their continued support and commitment to advancing health communication and community wellbeing in Samoa.

Together, we build a Healthy Samoa.

Strengthening Samoa-New Zealand Health Collaboration
Wellington, New Zealand

As part of his official visit to Wellington, Hon. Va’aaoao Alofipo, Samoa’s Minister of Health, met with Hon. Simeon Brown, New Zealand’s Minister of Health, to reaffirm the strong and enduring health partnership between Samoa and New Zealand.

During the visit, the Minister was also hosted by the Samoa High Commission Office in New Zealand, led by His Excellency Afamasaga Faamatalaupu Toleafoa, High Commissioner, alongside Ms Juliana Faataualofa Lafaialii, Deputy Head of Mission/Counsellor, Mrs Lise Taualoa, First Secretary, and members
of the Samoa High Commission.

Discussions highlighted Samoa’s key health priorities, including addressing the growing burden of non communicable diseases (NCDs), strengthening primary and community-based care, and building a sustainable and highly skilled health workforce.

“I would like to thank the Government of New Zealand, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Pasefika service providers, for their continued support in progressing programmes that enhance primary healthcare in Samoa,” said Hon. Va’aaoao Alofipo.

Central to this partnership is the continued expansion of the Long-Term Placements and Twinning Programme, supporting bilateral workforce exchange and system strengthening across both countries.

Both countries acknowledged strong alignment in their health priorities particularly in prevention, workforce development, and improving outcomes for Pacific populations and committed to advancing a more structured and coordinated partnership under the Polynesian Health Corridor.

Samoa reaffirmed its commitment to progressing this partnership at pace, including the development of Nurse Practitioner pathways, strengthening clinical leadership, and improving access to quality care for rural and underserved communities.

This strengthened collaboration reflects a shared vision to deliver sustainable, equitable, and culturally
responsive health systems for both Samoa and New Zealand.

🌟 Successful EHR Go Live – Malietoa Tanumafili II Hospital, Savai’i 🌟

Over the weekend, the Medical Records and Outpatient Departments at Malietoa Tanumafili II Hospital (MT2) in Tuasivi, Savai’i went live with the Tamanu Electronic Health Record (EHR) — another step toward Samoa’s vision of a fully connected digital health system.

With MT2 functioning as the island’s main referral hospital — effectively a mini national hospital — coordinated and accessible patient records are critical
to
🟣 ensure continuity of care
🟣 support clinical decision-making, and
🟣 allow patient information to follow individuals across services and locations.

Non-communicable diseases (NCD) remain the greatest burden on Samoa’s health system, making it essential to strengthen how we track and manage care over time.

🌿 One Patient. One Record. One Connected Health System for Samoa.

A connected EHR enables
🟢 long-term patient tracking,
🟢 stronger follow-up, and
🟢 a shift toward prevention, early detection, and improved management.

It also supports
🟢 disease surveillance,
🟢 service monitoring across districts, and
🟢 more informed decision-making at the national level.

This rollout contributes to Phase 3️⃣ of Samoa’s eHealth roll-out, focused on scaling and integrating systems nationwide — bringing us closer to a unified, people-centred health system.

👏 Fa’afetai tele lava to our MT2 health staff. Change like this is not easy — it takes patience, teamwork, and a willingness to adapt.

We are just beginning. The real value will come from how we continue to strengthen, use, and take ownership of these systems — improving workflows, data quality, and ultimately delivering better care for our communities.

🚀 The system is in place — now we build, sustain, and make it work for Samoa.

World Tuberculosis (TB) Day – 24 March 2026

Today, the Ministry of Health joins the global community in commemorating World Tuberculosis (TB) Day with the theme:
“Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver.”

Tuberculosis remains a serious public health concern, yet it is preventable and curable. This day serves as an important reminder of our collective responsibility to strengthen awareness, promote early detection, and ensure access to effective treatment for all.

In Samoa, the Ministry of Health continues to work collaboratively with our partners and communities to:
✔ Strengthen TB prevention and control efforts
✔ Improve early diagnosis and case detection
✔ Ensure timely and effective treatment and care
✔ Reduce stigma and raise public awareness

We encourage all members of the public to be vigilant and seek medical attention if you experience symptoms such as:
• Persistent cough lasting more than two weeks
• Fever and night sweats
• Unexplained weight loss
• Fatigue

Early detection saves lives and helps prevent the spread of TB within our families and communities.

Let us stand together in solidarity to eliminate Tuberculosis (TB) and build a healthier Samoa for all.
