Prime Minister Launches SAT $700,000 Government-Backed IBFC Sponsorship for Historic 2026 Universal Weightlifting Cup
APIA, SAMOA – March 26, 2026: The Samoa Weightlifting Federation (SWF) today announced a landmark partnership for the upcoming 2026 Universal Weightlifting Cup, confirming IBFC as the official naming rights sponsor. This milestone is supported by a $700,000 SAT investment from the Government of Samoa.
The event, which will host 70 nations, 500 athletes, and 200 officials, marks a historic first for the Pacific region. The tournament will be staged at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute in Tuanaimato.
Delivering the keynote address at this morning’s official launch, Prime Minister Hon. La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt underscored the national significance of the tournament.
“It is a privilege to launch our naming rights partnership for the IBFC Universal Cup 2026,” the Prime Minister stated. “This is a moment of immense national pride and a premier opportunity to showcase Samoa’s hosting capabilities to an international audience.”
The government’s $700,000 SAT contribution, facilitated through the Samoa International Finance Authority (SIFA) and IBFC, reflects a strategic commitment to sports development and international events that enhance Samoa’s global profile.
The Prime Minister further commended the SWF for its leadership: “I wish to acknowledge the tireless efforts of SWF President Tuaopepe Asiata Jerry Wallwork in securing these hosting rights. To our athletes: you are the ambassadors of our nation, representing the spirit and strength of Samoa.”
President Tuaopepe Asiata Jerry Wallwork characterized the announcement as a "pioneering milestone" for the region.
