💡 What is Falls Prevention—and Why Should We Care?

Falls can happen to anyone, at any age—but they’re especially common as we get older. The good news? Many falls are preventable with a few simple steps!

**Falls prevention** is all about reducing the risk of slips, trips, and tumbles by making small changes to our environment, health habits, and daily routines. It’s not just about avoiding injury—it’s about staying confident, independent, and active.

✨ Why it matters:

* Falls are one of the leading causes of injury, particularly in older adults
* Even a minor fall can impact mobility and confidence
* Preventing falls helps maintain independence and quality of life

🛠️ Simple ways to prevent falls:

* Keep walkways clear and well-lit
* Wear supportive, non-slip footwear
* Stay active with balance and strength exercises
* Have regular vision and health checks
* Use handrails and grab bars where needed

🏃‍♀️ How physiotherapy can help:
Physiotherapists play a key role in falls prevention by helping you move safely and confidently. They can:

* Assess your balance, strength, and walking pattern
* Create personalised exercise programmes to improve stability and coordination
* Teach techniques to prevent trips and recover balance
* Recommend mobility aids or home adjustments if needed
* Support you in rebuilding confidence after a fall

📩 If you or a loved one feel your balance isn’t what it used to be, or you've recently had a fall and are worried about having more, contact with us via email (Judith@physi-fit.co.uk) or Whatsapp and find out how we can help you!

Physi-Fit exercise classes to help us all age well and be our best celebrates 10 years today.
It started with someone continuously asking me when I was starting a class I wasn’t planning to start!!
The humble beginnings of a few friends in a room once a week to four classes, Three physios and an amazing team of volunteers is incredible.
We have new people joining most weeks to do a whole body workout tailored to the aches and pains of getting older. Also interspersed with health tips and the science behind the exercises. There’s space for more of you to join us, whether as a participant or as a volunteer so do get in touch if it’s for you.

💧 Let’s Talk About Incontinence

Incontinence is far more common than many people realise — and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about.
📊 A few important facts:
• Around 1 in 3 women and 1 in 10 men experience bladder or bowel leakage at some point in their lives
• It can affect people of all ages, not just older adults
• Many people live with symptoms for years before seeking help, often believing it’s “normal” or untreatable

🤔 Why might incontinence happen?
Incontinence can develop for many reasons, including:
• Pregnancy and childbirth
• Menopause and hormonal changes
• Prostate surgery
• Weak or poorly functioning pelvic floor muscles
• Chronic coughing, constipation, or heavy lifting
• Certain neurological conditions

💪 The importance of pelvic floor exercises
Your pelvic floor muscles support your bladder and bowel. If these muscles are weak or not working effectively, leakage can occur.
When performed correctly and consistently, pelvic floor exercises can:
• Improve bladder and bowel control
• Reduce leakage and urgency
• Support pelvic organs
• Boost confidence and quality of life

🧑‍⚕️ How physiotherapy can help
Physiotherapy can support the management of incontinence by helping you understand and strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. A physiotherapist can:
• Teach correct pelvic floor exercise technique
• Create a personalised exercise programme
• Address posture, breathing, strength, and coordination
• Offer practical advice on lifestyle factors that may affect symptoms
• Support recovery during different life stages, including pregnancy, post-natal care, menopause, or after surgery

Incontinence is common, manageable, and treatable— and you don’t have to live with it 💙

🌍 World Cancer Day 🌍

Today we join the global community to raise awareness about cancer — a disease that touches almost every one of us in some way.

📊 Did you know?
• In the UK alone, around 420,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year— that’s about person every 90 seconds
• Approximately 1 in 2 people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime
• Around 40% of cancers could be prevented by lifestyle changes like increased activity, healthy eating, and not smoking.

💙 How physiotherapy can help
Physiotherapy plays a valuable role in supporting people with cancer at every stage of their journey. It can help to:
• Manage treatment-related fatigue and increase energy levels
• Improve strength, flexibility, balance and mobility
• Reduce pain, stiffness and swelling
• Support recovery after surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or prolonged hospital stays
• Enhance confidence and independence for daily activities
• Improve quality of life and psychological well-being

Today and every day, let’s support patients, survivors, carers and health professionals working together to improve care, outcomes and quality of life for people affected by cancer. 💪

🎗️ Cervical Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet it continues to affect many women each year. Raising awareness and encouraging early detection can make a real difference.

📊 Did you know?

* Around 3,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year in the UK
* Regular cervical screening can prevent the majority of cases
* When found early, cervical cancer is often very treatable

⚠️ Signs & symptoms to be aware of:

‼️Unusual vaginal bleeding (between periods, after s*x, or after menopause)
‼️Discomfort or pain during s*x
‼️Ongoing pelvic or lower back pain
‼️Changes in vaginal discharge

Symptoms aren’t always present, which is why screening is so important.

🩺 Why screening matters
Cervical screening helps detect early cell changes before they develop into cancer. Even if you feel well, attending your appointment is an important step in looking after your health.

💙 How physiotherapy can support you
Physiotherapy can offer gentle, supportive care during and after treatment, helping to:

* Ease pain and stiffness
* Improve pelvic health and overall movement
* Support recovery and rebuild confidence
* Help you return to everyday activities at your own pace

🌸 This Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, let’s encourage kindness, open conversations, and looking after ourselves — and each other.

🧍‍♂️ The Importance of Good Posture – Physi-Fit Physiotherapy 🧍‍♀️

At Physi-Fit Physiotherapy, we know that good posture is essential for keeping your body moving comfortably and efficiently. Poor posture can place unnecessary strain on muscles and joints, often leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility over time.

✅ Supports spinal and joint health
Maintaining correct posture helps keep your spine aligned, reducing stress on the neck, shoulders, and lower back.

💺 Reduces aches and pain
Prolonged sitting, slouching, or poor positioning can contribute to ongoing back, neck, and shoulder pain. Addressing posture early can help prevent long-term issues.

⚖️ Improves balance and movement
Good posture enhances stability and body awareness, supporting safer, more confident movement in everyday life.

🫁 Boosts breathing and energy levels
An upright posture allows for better lung expansion, improving breathing efficiency and reducing fatigue.

💪 How Physi-Fit can help
Through regular physiotherapy intervention, we help strengthen key postural muscles, correct movement patterns, and build healthy habits before problems become long-term complaints.

💙 Small changes can make a big difference to how your body feels.

🔍 Why Should You Consider Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy plays a vital role in helping you move safely, recover effectively, and maintain independence at every stage of life.

⚖️ Improve Balance & Stability
Physiotherapy helps strengthen key muscles and improve coordination, reducing the risk of falls and increasing confidence when walking and moving — especially important as we age or after illness or injury.
🩺 Manage Long-Term Conditions
If you’re living with a long-term condition such as arthritis, chronic pain, or mobility limitations, physiotherapy can help manage symptoms, improve function, and support long-term independence and quality of life.
⏱️ Faster Recovery After Injury or Surgery
Targeted physiotherapy supports safe, effective healing, helping reduce stiffness, rebuild strength, and restore movement — allowing you to return to everyday activities sooner and with confidence.

Along with many other benefits! The list is endless.
