Keeping up with your new years’ resolutions?

It’s not just your diet or your workout plan which affects your health and well-being. Proper light exposure and good sleep are key contributing factors, too.

Figuring out which light you need for your space and finding the right solution can seem daunting. That’s why we are arranging seminars in 2024 where you can learn more about the effects of light and which solutions are available.

Email events@brainlit.com to make sure you don't miss out on our invitations! ☀

With Biocentric lighting we at BrainLit aim to set a new standard for indoor lighting. Research shows how important daylight is for our overall health. To understand how light influences our biology: we have a type of light-sensitive cells in the eye called ipRGCs (intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells). When light hits the retina in our eyes, the ipRGCs signal to the master clock (a brain region called the suprachiasmatic nucleus) that it is daytime, and the master clock responds by suppressing the production of the sleep hormone melatonin. 👀 🧠

Today, we spend on average twenty-one out of 24 hours indoors, in environments with lighting often designed to only reach sufficient light levels for visual purposes. It means we do not get the daylight we need to stay healthy. As an example, it can be over 100 000 lux outdoors in direct sunlight, around 10 000 lux on a cloudy day, while indoors we often have only 100-500 lux, with a color spectrum that falls significantly below the desired level.

Biocentric lighting is meticulously engineered, based on scientific research. It provides the health effects associated with daylight that affects essential functions in the body, for example, sleep, alertness, ability to concentrate, metabolism, immune system, cognitive ability, and mental health.

“We are exposed to too much light at night and not enough during the day because indoor electric lighting is far inferior to sunlight. In fact, according to recent research, a lack of sunlight during the day is even worse than the presence of light at night. Many cases of sleep problems are cured by addressing these environmental factors.”

Chronobiologist and Nobel prize laureate Michael Rosbash recently gave a lecture at the Madrid hospital and was subsequently interviewed by El Pais. His answers reveal new research results on the topic of chronobiology including the effects of light in relation to sleep deprivation.

How badly do screens affect our sleep? And is shift work potentially carcinogenic? Find out his answers in the interview.

6 years ago on December 10th, Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael W. Young were honored with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Their discoveries unveiled a vital physiological mechanism that explains circadian adaptation, carrying significant implications for human health and disease.

The conclusion was that “The discovery of self-sustained transcription/ translation feedback loops as the central component of the molecular mechanism by which clock genes control circadian oscillations in cells and tissues has led to a new paradigm in our understanding of how organisms anticipate and adapt to the regular daily environmental cues such as light.”

Today, general awareness of circadian rhythms is growing and there is a better understanding of how light affects our health. Since 2017, the research field has grown vastly and we can see a rise in demand for commercial products designed to support our circadian rhythm.

Our business is deeply rooted in science. BrainLit specializes in light to deliver improved health and well-being with measurable outcomes. This includes our daylight technology, Biocentric lighting, which we deliver through different solutions and form factors. We own the intellectual property rights for the personalization of light environments based on user feedback which means we can address your needs directly.

Are you aware that a stable circadian rhythm has many benefits for our health and well-being, including a stable and regular sleep cycle? 🌙

The human sleep/wake cycle has evolved according to the solar day. Due to our modern lifestyle, we seldom wake up and go to sleep in accordance with sunrise and sunset. Factors such as varying work schedules, increase in screen time and jet-setting travel habits have led to many varieties for sleep- and wake time amongst the population. Whilst small differences are natural, humans feel and perform at our best when we are as closely aligned with the natural rhythm of the day as possible.

Biocentric lighting is designed to reclaim your natural rhythm and help it sync with the day. So that you wake up and go to sleep at a time that is optimal for you. Pretty cool, right?
