*A Wake-Up Call for the Optometry Community*

Dear Doctor Optometry and members of DOA,

Greetings from the DOA,

It's my pleasure to share with you an audio conversation between DOA President and eminent Optometrist regarding current situation of optometry profession and Optometrist in India

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1J--MHJx_VaYfInwIcXaM3Ghx5RoUJQn2/view?usp=drivesdk
1.
DOA President: "The current state of the optometry profession in India is alarming. The lack of an Optometry Profession Council has led to unchecked proliferation of quackery, compromising the quality of eye care services and undermining the credibility of qualified optometrists."

2. Eminent Optometrist: "It's heartbreaking to see our profession being ruined by unqualified practitioners. The absence of a regulatory body has emboldened these quackers, making it difficult for us to establish our identity as primary eye care professionals."

3. DOA President: "The time is now! We need to take collective action to safeguard our profession. The PIL filed in the Supreme Court is a step in the right direction, but we need to keep the momentum going."

4. Eminent Optometrist: "I couldn't agree more. We need an Optometry Profession Council to regulate education, practice, and standards. It's the only way to restore the dignity and respect our profession deserves."

5. DOA President: "Let's join hands to make this happen. We owe it to ourselves, our patients, and the future of optometry in India."

6 *The Need of the Hour:*

- Unite the optometry community
- Support the PIL and advocate for an Optometry Profession Council
- Raise awareness about the importance of qualified optometrists
- Take collective action to protect the profession and patients

You are requested to listen to the conversation between the DOA President and the eminent Optometrist carefully and understand the truths of optometry profession status in India after the implementation of the National Commission for Allied and healthcare professions Act 2021.

✊ Appeal to Optometry Professionals of India
A Wake-Up Call for Our Profession: Why is the Optometry Profession Council only badly needed ✊

Dear Doctor Optometry and Members DOA,

Greetings of the day,

I am sharing a video for awareness and an eye-opener on Optometry, and how it is damaging the image of Optometry on social media

1. The time has come for us to rise together against the growing misinterpretation and conspiracy surrounding our noble profession. Recent attempts by certain ophthalmology professionals and social media influencers to undermine the identity of optometrists are not just misleading—they are a direct threat to the autonomy, dignity, and future of Optometry in India

video link
https://www.instagram.com/reel/DQy-DTFjJU7/?igsh=MXVyYXZub2FjaXEzeA==

2. Optometry is not a subset of ophthalmic science. It is a distinct, independent healthcare profession with its own scope, responsibilities, and contributions to public health. Yet, efforts are being made to dilute our identity under the proposed Ophthalmic Science Council, which would erase decades of progress and hard work by our community.

3. Why We Need an Optometry Council

🔹 Professional Autonomy: Optometrists must be governed by a council that understands and protects our unique role, not one that subsumes us under another discipline.

🔹 Educational Integrity: Our degrees and training must be recognised and safeguarded, ensuring that students receive proper placements in government hospitals and not relegated to private organisations without oversight.

🔹 Public Health Impact: Optometrists are frontline providers of vision care. Weakening our profession will directly harm millions of patients who rely on us for accessible, ethical, and preventive eye care.

🔹 Global Standards: Across the world, optometry is regulated by independent councils. India must not lag behind by allowing our profession to be overshadowed.

3. Call to Action
This is not just a policy debate—it is a battle for the survival of our profession. We must:

4. Unite under one voice of Delhi Optometrists Association to demand the establishment of a dedicated Optometry Council under the NCAHP Act, 2021.

5. Mobilize associations, institutions, and practitioners to support the ongoing Public Interest Litigation (PIL) for our cause.

6. Educate the public and policymakers about the true scope of optometry, countering misinformation spread by external influences.

7. Stand firm against any attempt to reduce optometry to a subordinate role under ophthalmology.

8. Final Words
Colleagues, this is our wake-up call. If we remain silent, we risk losing our professional identity forever. If we act now, we can secure a future where optometry thrives as an autonomous, respected, and indispensable pillar of healthcare in India.

Let us unite, let us act, and let us safeguard the dignity of Optometry.

*Dark Future & Present of Optometry Profession in the NCAHP Act*

Greetings from the DOA,

I am sharing with you all about the latest conversation between DOA Secretary and Chairman of the National Commission for Allied and healthcare professions Commission

1.As per Chairman & Secretary, the inclusion of Optometry in the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act has raised concerns among Optometrists. The current draft of the Act has several issues that threaten the future of the profession.

5 Key Concerns:

Lack of representation: Optometrists are not adequately represented in the Commission, which may lead to decisions that are not in the best interest of the profession.

6. Ophthalmic Science Council: The proposed Council may not address the specific needs of Optometrists, and may be dominated by Ophthalmologists.

7. Limited scope: The Act may restrict the scope of practice of Optometrists, limiting their ability to provide primary eye care services.

8. Lack of regulation: The Act may not provide adequate regulation of Optometry education and practice, compromising the quality of care provided to patients.

9. Present Challenges:

Unclear nomenclature: The Act uses unclear nomenclature, which may lead to confusion and ambiguity in the regulation of Optometry practice.

10. Lack of recognition: Optometrists are not recognized as independent practitioners, which may limit their ability to provide services and receive reimbursement.

The Delhi Optometrists Association (DOA) is working to address these concerns and ensure that Optometrists are recognized and regulated under the NCAHP Act.
