How much steroid should I apply?

Finger-tip unit (FTU) is a useful measurement.

One finger-tip unit (FTU) is measured as a thin line of cream squeezed from the nozzle from the tip to the first crease of your index (second) finger.

This amount is sufficient to cover an area that is double the size of an adult palm.

Is topical steroid safe?
Yes, if it is used correctly.

Topical steroids are identified by their strength (potency), ranging from low potency, eg 1% hydrocortisone cream, to very potent cream.

Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate strength depending on the
-site
-severity of the lesions
-age of your child

For example, only mild topical steroid is prescribed for lesions over the face as the skin is thin.

Always follow the instruction by your doctor. Topical steroid can bring unwanted side effects if you use them incorrectly.

Food allergy may be considered if your child have previously reacted to a food with immediate symptoms or in children with uncontrolled moderate to severe atopic eczema despite optimal treatment.

To make a diagnosis of food allergy, test results have to be correlated with a detailed history.

If not properly tested, your child may be positive to many foods which may not be a true allergy.

Please consult an expert for accurate evaluation.
