Normal results. Abnormal symptoms.

One of my clients a lovely woman going through menopause came to me exhausted and frustrated:

✅ Colonoscopy – normal
✅ Endoscopy – normal
✅ Blood work – normal

Yet she was bloated, gassy, constipated, and inflamed every single day.

Her gastroenterologist basically said she was “a hard patient”, gave her some fibre, and sent her on her way. 😳

Here’s what we know about women, especially during menopause:

👊 We are more prone to gut issues like IBS than men
👊 Our symptoms are often dismissed as hormonal, stress related, or “just IBS”
👊 Many women go years without real answers

But here’s the truth: she was not broken the system just wasn’t looking deeper.

A colonoscopy rules out serious disease that’s excellent and what we need but
but it doesn’t show:
🦠 Imbalances in gut bacteria
🦠 Yeast or parasites
🦠 Digestive enzyme issues
🦠 Chronic low grade inflammation

During menopause, hormonal changes can exacerbate these gut issues, leading to bloating, constipation, and that constant feeling of “off”.

💩 For my client, we ran a functional microbiome test and finally got clarity of how to fix it !😀

I’ve helped hundreds of women correct both iron deficiency and iron overload…
and honestly? I don’t like prescribing iron supplements straight up..

Hi, I’m Kirsten the Naturopath and I treat low iron by fixing the root cause, not just chasing numbers.

Here’s the truth most women aren’t told
I rarely prescribe iron straight away.

Why?
Because so many women walk into my clinic with major gut dysfunction — dysbiosis, SIBO, parasites, inflammation.

And when you throw iron into that mix?
You feed the very bugs causing the problem.

No wonder so many women feel worse, more bloated, more constipated, more inflamed after starting iron.

Iron supplements are not a one-size-fits-all fix.
They need to be used at the right time, in the right form, and when your gut is actually ready to absorb them.

“Menopause isn’t just about hot flashes or mood changes, your gut can also be affected by the shifting hormone levels. Estrogen and progesterone influence digestion, gut motility, and even the balance of your gut microbiota.

Common signs your gut may not be functioning optimally during menopause include:

Bloating or abdominal discomfort

Irregular bowel movements (constipation or diarrhea)

Food sensitivities or intolerances

Brain fog, low energy, or disrupted sleep

Increased inflammation or digestive discomfort after meals

Supporting your gut during this time is key for overall wellbeing, including hormone balance, immunity, and mental health.

Did you know that declining or fluctuating estrogen can directly alter your gut bacteria, reduce microbial diversity and increase gut permeability ?

12/02/2026

This week I have supported a number of women going through significant mental health challenges in midlife.
Low mood. Anxiety. Brain fog. Overwhelm.
And too often, they’ve been told it’s “just stress” or prescribed medication without deeper investigation into what is driving the change.
The relationship between hormonal transition and mental health is significant yet it remains under recognised in many clinical settings.
This is a conversation we need to be having.
Perimenopause and menopause are not just about hot flushes or irregular cycles.
They are profound neuroendocrine transitions.
Estrogen, progesterone and cortisol directly influence:

• Serotonin
• Dopamine
• GABA
• Sleep architecture
• Stress resilience
• Cognitive clarity

When these hormones fluctuate or decline, brain chemistry shifts with them.

For some women, this presents as mild mood changes.
For others, it can feel like a complete unraveling of emotional stability.

Yet many women experiencing severe psychological symptoms linked to hormonal imbalance are misdiagnosed or inadequately supported for years sometimes decades.

As a naturopath we must assess the whole picture:
Hormones. Stress load. Gut health. Inflammation. Nutrient status. Nervous system resilience.

Midlife mental health deserves comprehensive care not dismissal.

If you’re going through this stage and don’t recognise yourself anymore, please know:
It is common.
It is physiological.
And it is treatable with the right support.
