4 key things I would NOT recommend as a sports therapist:

I would NOT recommend static stretching before a workout. I would instead advise to always choose a more dynamic warm up which enables you to move through all joint ranges of movement.

I would NOT recommend to stop moving or have complete rest after an injury. Relative rest/a decrease in activity can be helpful pending the extent of the injury to help with some tissue healing, but pain free movement as soon as is possible is absolutely key to a quicker recovery.

I would NOT recommend always rushing for an MRI after sustaining an injury unless you suspect a serious injury like a broken bone. Most general injuries can heal on their own following correct physical therapy, time and exercise prescription.

I would NOT recommend that people always rush to the medicine cabinet to reach for muscle relaxing ‘Pills’ post injury. Yes, sometimes anti-inflammatories may help to get you through initial pain but movement is the best form of medicine following an injury.

I read a good piece recently about INJURY❗️Dare I even utter the word 🤫 but yet it’s a topic that pretty much everyone can resonate with and one that got me thinking.

Whether you are a professional athlete, a regular gym goer, a recreational golfer or a sedentary person who rarely dabbles in activity, each and everyone of us will most likely sustain an injury in our lifetime.

So……what causes injuries and can injuries be avoided?

Do injuries occur because we are not strong enough, or because we are over training and fatigued, or because we aren’t doing our specific sport related conditioning, or because we have poor technique, or because our nutrition is not on point, or because the quality of our programme is questionable, or because of our age, or because we are not listening to our bodies or because there was a full moon?….the list goes on.

The fact is, some injuries can be straight forward and some we don’t always know the cause. There are a number of cause factors to consider, but I agree that sometimes we have to take a step back and stop always thinking we did something wrong. We should accept that injuries occur and instead focus on the recovery.

Are you FEELING STRESSED?? Are you suffering with tension in your neck, upper back and shoulders?

STRESS can wreak havoc on our bodies and contribute to physical deterioration. It can cause regular headaches, fatigue, sleep problems, anxiety, inability to concentrate and depression to name a few.

When we are feeling stressed or anxious our muscles tighten in response and massage is a scientifically proven way to help manipulate and relax the tense tissue and promote relaxation.

Why should sports massage be a regular part of your training regime?

Injury Prevention
Regular massage treatment should be seen as an investment. Massage can help to alleviate muscle tension build up, help increase flexibility and combat muscle imbalances. If left untreated, the risk of injury increases which will then hinder training. Act sooner rather than later!

Positive Training Habits
Training for a sport or working out in general can challenge the body physically and sometimes mentally. Having regular massage is important to help focus on recovery by rejuvenating fatigued soft tissue for when training starts again. Regular massage not only helps the body recover but helps to de-stress the mind and encourage better sleep.
