After careful consideration, Noble Naturopathic has made the decision to close the Point Grey location at Body and Soul.

This was not an easy decision. The Point Grey community was warm and welcoming from the beginning, and the care delivered there reflected everything this practice stands for. Dr. Jacqueline van der Made thrived in that space and supported many patients meaningfully throughout her time there.

Ultimately, ongoing challenges in recruiting additional naturopaths to the location made it unsustainable to continue. That reality, while disappointing, led to this decision.

To everyone who supported the Point Grey location, thank you. And to the team at Body and Soul Vancouver, the partnership and community built together meant a great deal.

Cardio does not need to be complicated.

The research supports a simple principle - low intensity and high intensity exercise perform different functions in the body, and a mix of both produces better metabolic outcomes than either alone.

Low intensity work builds the aerobic base, trains the body to use fat as fuel, supports recovery, and is sustainable enough to do consistently. High intensity intervals drive cardiovascular adaptation, improve insulin sensitivity, and elevate metabolic rate in the hours after exercise.

A practical starting point is spending 70 to 80% of total cardio time at an easy, conversational pace and 20 to 30% working hard enough that conversation becomes difficult (or using intervals).

That ratio is not a rigid rule. It is a framework that works for most people most of the time and it is infinitely better than avoiding cardio.

Movement is the intervention. Complexity is the barrier.

Save this for the next time cardio feels overwhelming.

Can’t fall asleep or can’t stay asleep? The root causes are different.

Onset Insomnia - Difficulty Falling Asleep Common patterns: Lying awake for 30 minutes to hours, racing thoughts, worry, mental hyperactivity, physical restlessness.

Root causes: High evening cortisol, anxiety or unresolved stress, low GABA or serotonin, overstimulation from screens or caffeine, circadian rhythm disruption.

Maintenance Insomnia - Waking During the Night Common patterns: Waking at consistent times (often 2-4 AM), difficulty returning to sleep, sometimes needing bathroom trips.

Root causes: Blood sugar crashes triggering adrenaline, high nighttime cortisol, low progesterone (especially in women), sleep apnea or breathing issues, nutrient deficiencies affecting sleep maintenance.

The treatment approach differs significantly based on which type predominates. Testing reveals the specific barriers to restorative sleep and guides targeted interventions.

After 5 years of testing metabolisms, I needed to stop trying to work through potential causes of low levels uniquely each time I saw it. So I came up with a framework.

This has served my patients really well. It’s like a list of boxes to check when metabolism isn’t responding.

Here it is:

F - Fuel: Ensure adequate nutrition. Under-eating slows metabolism further as the body goes into conservation mode. The body needs fuel to burn fuel.

I - Inflammation: Reduce systemic inflammation that impairs metabolic function. Anti-inflammatory foods, omega-3s, antioxidants, gut healing. Inflammation disrupts insulin signaling and mitochondrial function.

R - Circadian Rhythm: Align eating and activity with natural circadian rhythms. Eating earlier in the day improves insulin sensitivity. Late-night eating impairs metabolism.

E - Exercise Impact on Metabolism: Strategic exercise to boost metabolic rate. Strength training preserves and builds muscle mass—muscle burns more calories at rest. High-intensity interval training improves insulin sensitivity and fat oxidation.
