Shift Nutrition & Counselling

Shift Nutrition & Counselling Check my podcast - The Art & Science of Eating! https://shiftnutrition.com/artandsciencepodcast I have worked in the field of Eating Disorders, since 2006.

Specifically, I have worked with the Vancouver Coastal Health Eating Disorders Program in Richmond for 9 years, the Fraser Health Eating Disorders Program for 2 years and the internationally renowned Community Outreach Partnership Program for Vancouver’s St. Paul’s Hospital Eating Disorders Program for 4 years and private practice throughout this time. My work in the area of disordered eating started as a dietitian. But quickly I realized that in order to properly support my clients, I needed to help address the deeper concerns of their relationship with food and their body. So I completed a Masters in Counselling Psychology to more effectively support my clients address the myriad of ways food intersects in their life in such things as depression, anxiety and trauma. As such, I work from a trauma-informed, weight-inclusive, anti-diet or non-diet approach (such as Health at Every Size® (HAES) and Intuitive Eating (IE)). I hold degrees in Biology from Simon Fraser University, Food and Nutrition from Ryerson University in Toronto and Masters in Counselling Psychology from the University of Calgary. I am a member of the College of Dietitians of British Columbia, Dietitians of Canada and the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. I have also co-authored a manual for the self-management of chronic disease and am a regular contributor to local and national news outlets, and magazines such as Chatelaine, Flare and Elle.

👀You can't see an eating disorder👀Just because someone, or you, may not look like what you've seen in social media feeds, TV or movies what someone with an eating disorder looks like, doesn't mean that you or they are not struggling.

🤒You don't have to get more sick to deserve care and support. Getting help at any point of your journey is helpful.

You don't have to look emaciated, to be undernourished 👩🏻‍🦽👬🏃🏿‍♂️People of all sizes struggle with disordered eating, including anorexia.

🙅🏾‍♀️You don't have to identify as female to have an eating disorder, men struggle as well.🙋🏻

🤔Getting help can be helpful!! 🥺I know you've tried everything, but you may not have tried getting eating disorder support. Or maybe you haven't gotten the support you need.

Getting help is also very scary, particularly as people don't talk about disordered eating openly. But there are more than a million people in Canada that are diagnosed with an eating disorder, and I speculate that's grossly underestimated.

But people do get better.
You can too!

It’s estimated that eating disorders affect one million Canadians. But not everyone sees themselves reflected in representations of the illness.
•
For years, public figures such as American singer Karen Carpenter, who died from anorexia in 1983, shaped the idea of a person with an eating disorder: white, female and painfully thin.
•
Those tropes mean some people may not identify as having one or are reluctant to get help, says Sophia Khan, a registered dietitian in Saskatoon.
•
“Eating disorders don’t discriminate,” she said. “You can’t always tell someone has an eating disorder just by looking at them.”

Only 10 per cent of people with an eating disorder seek help, according to the BridgePoint Center for Eating Disorders in Saskatchewan.

Research has found eating disorders also have the highest overall mortality rate of any mental illness.
•
Over the summer, photographer Hannah Crease-Maclean interviewed and took portraits of six Saskatchewan residents who say they don't fit the stereotypical image of people with eating disorders.
•
They include men, people of colour and people with larger bodies.

Have you cut back on carbohydrates, but then feel out of control around cookies or chips at night?

Starches and grains, like rice, noodles, bread potatoes 🍞🍚🍜 are important and staple foods. By cutting them out, or not eating enough, your body doesn’t get the important macronutrient carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the basis of ALL FUEL in our body. Meaning that every cell needs carbs, your brain works on carbs. You need carbohydrates to build muscle, to build hormones. You need them for everything!
So cutting carbs inevitably leads to feeling out of control at other times, because of this restriction. And it makes you feel disconnected from your body.

Throwback! This is one of the first podcast episodes I published on my podcast channel, “The Art and Science of Eating.” There are different types of trauma and they do impact our transition to disordered eating or an unhealthy relationship with ourselves or food. I talked to a guest about the bridge between trauma and disordered eating, and that oftentimes it is a traumatic experience in the past that causes a dramatic transition to disordered eating.

I want to strengthen my clients’ relationship with food and make them feel safe in and around food despite being in an environment that may push for diet culture or restriction of eating.

I’m honoured to be a guest and share ‘s ’sGutReal podcast episode, where I introduce a bit of myself and how our professions in disordered eating and digestive disorders intersect. Oftentimes when I see clients I estimate a fair amount also have a digestive symptom and so I think this was an amazing opportunity to touch bases with Andrea on that, as well as discussing our approaches to care for our patients!

We’re winding down Pride month! – Happy Pride Month everyone and hope you had a good one! Through determination and poise, the 2SLGBTQI+ has worked tirelessly for equality, with beginnings of pride month back in 1969. I feel grateful for the community’s presence as their advocacy helps everyone of all genders, sexes, ages, abilities and ethnicities.

Pride month and the surrounding events that have made gender and sexual identities and fat bodies more visible through has been a huge contribution to people feeling safe, being who they are.
