We have a wonderful blast from the past to share with you. In 1993, Dr. Max Cynader was featured in Maclean’s magazine for his work in neuroscience and brain health.

We’ve come a long way in neuroscience since then, but the real leap forward is only at the beginning.

He nearly became an astronaut. “I saw an ad in the paper and I answered it,” recalls Max Cynader, adding wryly, “I even had some qualifications.” The year was 1983, and the Canadian government was looking for fit young men and women, preferably with skills in science, to pioneer the country....

Sixty and Me is a digital magazine about life after 60, and one of the publications Dr. Max Cynader writes a monthly column for on brain health.

While brain health is important for every age, Max particularly enjoys writing for this group. When you’re in your 60s, you may start to see the effects of your lifestyle choices on how you are doing today and how your brain will age. Many believe these brain changes to be irreversible, but accumulating evidence shows that there are still opportunities to alter your brain health for the better, and to reduce your risk of dementia through relatively simple lifestyle choices.

Dr. Max Cynader is one of Canada's leading Neuroscientists. Winner of many awards (Order of Canada, Order of British Columbia, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Canadian Medical Hall of Fame), he is the Founding Director of the University of British Columbia's Brain Research Centre and Centre f...

What do you need to live a long healthy life? Is it just one apple a day? Is it being super athletic? Perhaps it’s all about those 20 minute cat naps.

After 50 years of studying brain health, Dr. Max Cynader will tell you that it isn’t just one thing. In fact, it’s many, and those many things can be categorized within 5 pillars, all of which depend on each other for best results. If one falls, they all fall.

Brain health is very important for those of us who want to live long and purposeful lives. These 5 pillars are of utmost importance!

Each cell in our body can have several hundred thousand proteins within it, and in many disease conditions, one or more of these proteins may be present in too high an abundance.

Primary Peptides, which Dr. Max Cynader co-founded in 2015, has developed a technology that enables us to degrade troublesome proteins in a rapid, highly selective and reversible manner. Their technology has already been applied to several conditions including stroke, heart attack, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and various targets in Oncology. They have signed partnerships with three other biotech companies to advance these drugs into the clinic, and their lead compound has completed a successful phase I trial in stroke, with phase 2 starting in a few months.

In addition to being able to degrade particular proteins, they have developed technology enabling us to prevent/block unwanted interactions between pairs or groups of disease-related proteins. This leads to the ability to hit previously “undruggable” targets in several disease areas.

Our goal is to create new medicines through protein manipulation to treat diseases that enable patients to live a healthier and longer life.

Aging has many wonderful elements, and if you look after yourself, you’ll be able to enjoy them to the fullest.

Sadly, our ability to construct new networks and memories tends to decline with age, but scientists are learning a lot about the ways to strengthen and preserve our ability to make memories and form new networks.

For simple ways to keep your memories clear and your mind sharp, read Dr. Max Cynader’s latest piece for Sixty and Me.
