Home of The Smelly Gypsy

“In life you can make your own decisions or let other people make those decisions for you. Being Above The Influence is about staying true to yourself, and not letting people pressure you into being less than you. So be yourself.” – Unknown

The Smelly Gypsy is the smelly side of my business, a line of all natural handmade products including goat’s milk soap, lip balms and lotions. I put nothing artificial in my products and my soaps are no exception. Each morning I go out to the barn to milk my goat before tethering her in the field for the day. Rainwater is sometimes hand collected at 4am when an unexpected rain storm shows up and I wake to thunder realizing I am in need of the water for my next batch of soap. Other times, it is collected as it falls from the tin roof off the barn. It is then strained off from any impurities that may have fallen in during collection. Most of the herbs I use for coloring I gather from my gardens and fields to dry and powder. All scents come from essential oils I purchase from reputable sources. I go through the same process when making my lip balms and lotions. Nothing artificial or toxic will ever be used when blending the ingredients for these products as well. Why “The Smelly Gypsy”? I am a wanderer at heart and we are working towards making that a reality at least part time. In a few years we hope to travel and take in the sights, sounds and smells of the world. There is so much beauty in this world and I want my children to have the chance to witness as much as possible. It’s always been my dream to renovate an old bus or purchase an RV to live in full time, traveling from town to town and stopping to work when money is needed. My dream has changed slightly, today I envision us selling our handcrafted products at festivals and markets as we travel. I sell my handmade herbal goat’s milk soap throughout the year. At festivals and markets where I usually sell them, the number one thing people say always refers to the scents of my soaps:

“I could smell you all the way at the other end of the row.”

“So THIS is what I’ve been smelling!”

“Your booth smells so good.”

Thus, the name “The Smelly Gypsy” was born to my product line, combining my love of wandering and my love of smelly things in my life. Did I mention how much I love skunks? Well, that’s a story for another time…

I’ve been quiet on here for awhile and there’s a good reason for that! After a LOT of hard work behind-the-scenes for the past several months, I'm so excited to finally announce...I have a new book coming out on January 7, 2020!!!

My new book is Herbalism at Home, a book that teaches the basic steps of starting herbalism from the supplies you’ll need and how to make basic remedies to profiles of 40 herbs that cover 125 recipes for an entire range of health issues. I hope that you’ll find this to be a valuable at-home book to have on hand to create your personal apothecary for yourself and your family.

You can learn more, see the book here and even pre-order your own copy: https://amzn.to/2rEKAsz.

Over the coming weeks, I'll be sharing sneak peeks, tips, how-tos, and a whole lot more so you can get excited right along with me. Stay tuned!

I've created a Kickstarter to try to fund the printing of my 2019 wall calendars which is part of a year long project to spread the word about needing to sustainably grow, harvest and source at risk native medicinal plants. I'd be grateful if you could help spread the word!

A 2019 wall calendar featuring "at risk" native medicinal plants that will be featured in the 2019 issues of Herbal Roots zine.

One of my clients recently wrote an article on her experiences working with an herbalist (me). I would like to point out that this is her wording as I do not "recommend" but it's a great to see through the eyes of a client working with an herbalist.

Overwhelmed by all those herbs and supplements? Here’s what it’s like to work with a registered herbalist rather than going it alone—plus herbal insights from Traditional Medicinals’ marketing manager of innovation, Zoe Kissam.
