Support Our Mission for Greater Visibility!

We need your help to expand our reach on social media and connect with more individuals who can benefit from our services. As a dedicated non-profit, the Access Center is committed to supporting individuals with disabilities in achieving independence within the community.

Our core services include:

- Information & Referral: Access to crucial resources and support.

- Peer Support: Building a community of shared experiences.

- Independent Living Skills Training: Empowering skills for everyday life.

- Advocacy: Individual, self, and systemic support for rights and opportunities.

- Individual Transitioning: Helping individuals move towards independence.

Additionally, our REDI Program provides recycled medical equipment, we support Youth Transitions, and offer Disability Awareness Training through our "Think This is Easy?" program.

As a community-based organization, donations from individuals are vital to continuing our mission. Your support can help us increase our online visibility, reach more people in need, and make a significant impact.

If you're interested in donating or learning more about how you can be involved, please visit: www.acils.com/make-a-difference/ or reach out to us at info@acils.com.

Living with a disability or chronic illness often means letting go of the idea of a "perfect" life—one that's always busy and full of spontaneous plans. But what comes instead isn’t a lesser life; it’s just different.

This new way of living is all about resilience, creativity, and a kind of strength that many people don’t get to develop. It might involve using mobility aids, having support workers, taking rest days, or enjoying quiet time at home. But it also includes bravery, personal growth, and a deep appreciation for what truly matters.

Being independent doesn’t always mean doing everything on your own. Sometimes, it means asking for help, using available support, and finding new ways to engage with the world.

Disability makes you no less worthy of all the good things. 🩷💚🩷

April is Autism Awareness Month ❤️💙🩷💚

Autism represents a vast and beautiful spectrum — it’s not a one-size-fits-all condition. Each individual experiences it uniquely, and that diversity is something to be celebrated.

While a label may be assigned, it does not define their identity or potential.

Keep in mind that some of history's greatest minds — such as Albert Einstein, Mozart, and Isaac Newton — were on the spectrum and made remarkable contributions to our world.

Let’s foster understanding, acceptance, and support this month and throughout the year.

Meet “The Rolling Rs”: Roland Sykes, Roy Poston, and Roger Flint, the visionary founders of The Access Center for Independent Living (ACIL). These relentless advocates transformed the disability rights movement locally and nationally, empowering countless individuals with disabilities to live independently.

Roland "Commander" Sykes, a coal miner turned disability rights champion, co-founded ACIL and pioneered initiatives like wheelchair basketball at Wright State University and DIMENET, a groundbreaking network that connected people with disabilities. His innovative spirit and humor left an indelible mark on the movement.

Roy Poston, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and pilot, led ACIL as Executive Director and was the first disabled pilot to perform in a major air show. His dedication to the disability rights movement and community ties were unparalleled.

Roger Flint, a dynamic advocate, co-founded ACIL and Forward Motions, Inc., empowering disabled individuals to drive. His influence extended across Ohio and beyond, playing a pivotal role in numerous organizations and campaigns.

Their legacy continues to inspire new generations, ensuring that the fight for equality and independence endures. Their memory lives on through ACIL and advocates dedicated to disability rights. 💪✨
