Worth The Fight - WTF Gardens

Worth The Fight - WTF Gardens The chronic life isn't easy, gardening can help in many ways! Take this journey with me!

This page is a part of Chiari Bridges and the Worth The Fight (WTF!) group. Gardening has become such an important part of our healing process that we wanted to share with you what my husband and I have been doing with it. We will talk about health and the importance of trying to eat organically, we will talk about our medical conditions, and we will talk about our faith as it pertains to our conditions and gardening.

A few years ago, we bought a couple of Thompson grape plants on clearance at the end of the growing season. Turned out that they had a fungal infection. We cut them down for the winter, put them in a larger pot and waited... They came back and we put them in barrel pots, but read that the roots needed 4 feet of root space. We love repurposing and had these chairs Johnny made me like 15 years ago. We took the bottoms out and broke up the dirt underneath. Johnny built an arbor for them and we're getting our first clusters of grapes. Eventually, when he recovers, we plan on putting a small bench underneath!

Johnny wasn't well, so we skipped doing our fall/winter garden last year. In California, it usually rains in the winter and early spring, and boy did it! When we went out to our neglected garden in early Spring, we were astonished at the w**ds (some as tall as me). It was discouraging and a lot of work to fix, but God had light at the end of the tunnel.

1. The w**ds were in the pathways and the beds, so they served as cover crops that protected our soil!

2. When we finally got around to w**ding the flower beds, we had volunteer cosmos coming up!

While our neighbors all reported record w**ds in their garden, I'm pretty sure ours is a composting problem (mostly anyway). We weren't checking the temperatures to make sure that it was getting hot enough to kill the w**d seeds (an absolute must if you're putting w**ds in your compost).

We've also been working on lining the pathways with organic cardboard and wood chips. We almost went with gravel, but decided against it as I'm not 💯 that I wont move my beds, so keeping the soil in the pathways healthy is important! That's permaculture!

We also fixed the old fountain and put it in the front corner for all to enjoy! Cosmos on one side of the fountain and I'll probably add Zinnias to the other side!\

Gardening is always a learning experience... regardless of the season! Roll with your seasons!

Our two year old dwarf peach tree...

Last year we removed most of the peaches, but let it grow a couple for sampling.

This year, we removed more than half of them because the branches were still too small to support them all. We also had to deal with a little peach leaf curl, which we got early, so it was easier than we thought it would be.

They're small fruit, but WOW, they are the SWEETEST PEACHES we've ever had... and the best news, unlike the peaches we used to buy in the grocery store, we know exactly what went into growing them! Next year, our branches should be a little stronger to support more of our delicious organic peaches!

Like it or not, surgeries are a part of life for us, but we can't go from surgery to surgery and expect them to make us feel better. There's too many things going on with us at one time. The damage most of us have to our vagus nerve creates an open door for things like MCAS and neuroinflammation (problems often overlooked by our doctors). While it's easy to feel powerless in all of it, we're not (at least not completely). We need to continue to seek the help we need while we move to walk in the power we still have! What we consume is always going to be a key part of that. I know it's hard, but it's part of the fight... and you're worth the fight!

Chiari affects my equilibrium and gait, so walking across the lawn to get to the mailbox is often problematic for me. One little rock or divot can cause a fall, and a fall with low intracranial pressure (reduced cerebrospinal fluid in my head) is hard on my brain. So Johnny and our youngest son made me a pathway. I'm so blessed!

I hate filling the landfills and buying something new that will eventually end up in the landfills, especially when I can recreate what I have to serve another need. I am creative (like my Father)! I am capable, even if I'm slower than most with disabilities (gosh I hate that word). I have Filipina blood which means I understand the value of a dollar, and I have been blessed with an exceptionally patient and handy husband!

I'm not sure it's gonna work, but if it doesn't it only cost me $40 (in nontoxic paint) to try it. If it works I'll show y'all later!
