Johnny wasn't well, so we skipped doing our fall/winter garden last year. In California, it usually rains in the winter and early spring, and boy did it! When we went out to our neglected garden in early Spring, we were astonished at the w**ds (some as tall as me). It was discouraging and a lot of work to fix, but God had light at the end of the tunnel.
1. The w**ds were in the pathways and the beds, so they served as cover crops that protected our soil!
2. When we finally got around to w**ding the flower beds, we had volunteer cosmos coming up!
While our neighbors all reported record w**ds in their garden, I'm pretty sure ours is a composting problem (mostly anyway). We weren't checking the temperatures to make sure that it was getting hot enough to kill the w**d seeds (an absolute must if you're putting w**ds in your compost).
We've also been working on lining the pathways with organic cardboard and wood chips. We almost went with gravel, but decided against it as I'm not 💯 that I wont move my beds, so keeping the soil in the pathways healthy is important! That's permaculture!
We also fixed the old fountain and put it in the front corner for all to enjoy! Cosmos on one side of the fountain and I'll probably add Zinnias to the other side!\
Gardening is always a learning experience... regardless of the season! Roll with your seasons!
