I am a childbirth & parenting educator, fitness instructor, educational assistant and mom of two amazing girls. I have a diploma in social services and childbirth education and a degree in family and community social services from the University of Guelph-Humber. I have been teaching childbirth education classes for 17 years and have experience teaching both hospital and community based classes. I began my career as birth doula providing labour, birth, and postpartum support including breastfeeding and newborn care. I moved into education after graduating from Humber and Women's College childbirth and parenting education program and started teaching a variety of prenatal classes including early pregnancy, childbirth preparation, cesarean birth preparation, newborn care and breastfeeding. For the last ten years I have been teaching "all about puberty" workshops in Montessori schools all over Toronto. I have to come to realize the importance of this rather HUGE topic and the positive impact it makes just by talking about it. Kids are extremely curious, have a million questions, want the information, and consider it important and necessary. Additionally, I run parent evenings that go through talking to children about sexuality. Not only have I run these workshops for Montessori parents, but also TDSB parent councils, Autism Ontario and other parenting groups. I was a figure skater for 17 years, ice-danced competitively, and was an amateur coach. After I stopped skating at 21 I became a fitness and dance instructor. I have instructed fitness kickboxing classes, boot camps, circuits, HIIT, Zumba and stroller fitness classes. I have instructed events for Sunnybrook Hospital, University of Toronto Scarborough, Autism Ontario and many others. My background in Social Services led me to take an 18 month contract position with The Toronto Foundation for Student Success as the food rescue coordinator, a pilot project done in collaboration with Second Harvest. I facilitated relationships between TDSB student nutrition programs and local food retailers that would donate surplus produce to these programs. It was a great feeling to know that perfectly edible food was being saved from landfill and going to children that were hungry and needed it. After the contract ended I wanted to give back to my own community so I volunteered as the student nutrition coordinator at my daughters' elementary school. I saw firsthand the importance of proper nutrition and the difference it makes throughout a child's day. As a part-time educational assistant for the TDSB I have had the pleasure of supporting ESL students and students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. I love playing the ukulele and have be strumming away for years! I have taught ukulele lessons in schools, private in home class and classes through through Zoom and Google Meets. Finally, I am married to my partner in crime Aaron, and I'm a mom of two AMAZING girls ages 9 and 11. Aili was born at Michael Garron Hospital and Avery was born at home. Both girls were born under the care of my amazing midwives and although my birth stories are completely different they were both very positive!

No matter what I'm teaching or presenting I like to have FUN in the process. Everything I do comes with some humour and a lot of laughs which makes learning easier, more interesting and more relaxing. I have a lot of experience both personally and professionally in these areas and have a passion for making education fun and rewarding!

I’m Janice! Here’s a little bit about me...

What I love most about being a Health Educator, Facilitator and Instructor, is having the opportunity to work with all walks of life in various socio-economic and diverse communities. You might see me teaching a dance or fitness class at a community street party, local school or seniors residence... I might be hosting a family wellness night, running a used clothing drive or meet and greet... I could be organizing a fundraiser or event for a local charity or community cause...I might be organizing, facilitating or participating in a professional training, development or well-being workshop, or I might be supporting and educating parents as their children enter into the world or begin a new stage of life...

I became a Birth and Postpartum Doula when I was 19 and have had the pleasure of attending births throughout the GTA and surrounding area. Soon after becoming a doula, I became a Childbirth and Lactation Educator and Baby Massage Instructor. I graduated from Humber and Women’s College Health Sciences Centre. My program was a unique multi-discipline program, was the only childbirth education program approved by the ministry of training, colleges and universities and I graduated with Honors. I also graduated from Centennial College's Social Service Worker Program in 2002. My educational background also includes Child Development, Human Sexuality, Adult Education, Curriculum Design and Group Dynamics. I have a lot of experience in this field teaching both community and hospital based classes and enjoy every class I teach!

I started facilitating Children’s Sexual Health workshops years ago and quickly realized how important it was. I also realized the importance of talking to children and youth about balance in their lives, exercise, mindfulness, healthy eating and recognizing stress. This is when I developed the Healthy Body and Mind Program with the help of a other professionals and educators. I am hired to teach this program for many private schools and parenting groups in and outside of the GTA. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous at first, talks about testicles, scrotums, vaginas, vulvas and.... well... you know the rest...

Growing up I struggled with body image, weight fluctuations and recovered from an eating disorder. I got the support I needed, educated myself, took courses, trained hard and got really into teaching fitness when I learned how to make it fun and engaging. I became a Fitness Instructor and Trainer in 2009 and Zumba Fitness Instructor and Children's Fitness Coach shortly after. Making fitness fun and enjoyable was something I wanted to pass onto others. It became my passion…to show people that fitness and fun can mix! I was a figure skater for nearly 16 years, did some amateur coaching for the City of Toronto and East York Skating Club and credit my skating career for bringing me out of my shell.
