If you're a master's-level music therapist looking for a short-term work engagement, we'd love to have you! Whether you're looking for a full caseload or working part-time with however many clients you'd like (Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays available), this short-term (5-6 months) engagement does have the opportunity to become long-term, dependent on funding. Pay is per hour worked, not per clinical hour completed, and starts at $30-32 per hour (depending on experience).

We’re looking for a neuroaffirmative, client-led music therapist. This role would mainly entail working with autistic and neurodivergent children and teens, as well as individuals of all ages with cognitive and/or physical disabilities. Sessions predominantly take place in our cozy, well-stocked clinic space at 2906 Beacon Street (alongside a few community-based clients).

We are prioritizing applications from master's level clinicians at this time due to funding, but still accepting bachelor's level applicants (differentiated pay rate).

If you’d like to apply, please start by sending your resume to Marissa at marissa@resonatemt.com

Questions? Text or call Marissa at 719-492-5282

We have an urgent message- music therapy in Colorado is at incredible risk.

The short ‘why’ (please see our full post on our website): Many music therapy (MT) clients in the state of Colorado rely on state medicaid waivers for MT coverage. The state plans to cut reimbursement rates by a combined 40%, with an implementation date of 5-7 months from now. Margins are already tight when it comes to music therapy services- music therapy practices will either go under, or will no longer be able to provide services under Medicaid waivers.

Please help us by submitting comments directly to the state through their provided form- we will link to this on the homepage of our site, resonatemt.com.

Under ‘Which LTSS Sustainability Action(s) Is Your Comment About?’, select ‘Reduce Movement Therapy to Align with Rate Methodology’. Your public comment to HCPF could be in reference to your experience with MT and its value, or asking them to consider other cost-saving actions outside of a drastic cut that devalues providers, and will make it impossible for providers to continue accepting Medicaid waiver clients.

Music therapy has been an established service under these waivers for decades, and we’ve made a transformative difference in the lives of the individuals and families we work with. We help clients reach important life goals through music-based interventions, whether those goals are physical, cognitive, regulatory, or social/emotional. Music therapists are trained, with a minimum of a four-year degree in music therapy, a subsequent 1,200 clinical training hours, after which they’re eligible to sit for the board exam for music therapists. Your support could mean a world of difference for us! As a reminder, all info for providing feedback on these cuts is on our website, resonatemt.com.

Gear up for a fun afternoon of trick-or-treating at our Fall open house! Along with food trucks, Fall crafts and games, music, and other activities, we will have four ‘houses’ from which you can trick-or-treat. Each ‘resident’ (Resonate staff as well as some wonderful volunteers) will have a candy, gluten-free and dye-free candy, and non-edible treats. Whose ‘house’ are you most excited to trick-or-treat at?

Sarah:

Sarah is our resident at 258 Speech Street and one of Resonate’s speech therapists. This year, Sarah will be handing out treats from her castle in full princess garb. Sarah’s hobbies include practicing articulation with her knights, tending to her magical garden, and talking with her castle visitors.

Pat:

You can find Pat at 259 Speech Street. Pat is visiting her grandchildren from Halloween Town, so be sure to stop by while she is in town. Pat enjoys making cookies in her house for her grandchildren, fending off the big, bad wolf, and sneakily having a chocolate bar after bedtime.

Mica:

Mica is one of our amazing music therapists. They recently moved from Hogwarts to 257 Music Avenue, so be sure to give them a warm welcome to the neighborhood! Mica’s favorite activities include catching the golden snitch (150 points for Slytherin!), participating in the goblet of fire, and helping their fellow wizards emotionally regulate through music.

Pippa:

When you knock on the door of 2506 Music Avenue, don’t be surprised when a kid opens the door. Pippa may seem young, but don’t let her fool you! Her magic makes her look younger than she really is. Pippa enjoys casting spells to turn lipstick from red to black, befriending local spiders, and making potions in her mom’s old cauldron.

Our sensory-friendly open house for all of our clients and community members is tomorrow, October 25, 2025, 3-5 pm. Join us at 2906 Beacon Street, Colorado Springs, 80907. All are welcome!

October is AAC Awareness Month! AAC stands for alternative and augmentative communication. AAC includes low and high-tech tools and strategies that provide access to communication. Read on to learn more about AAC!

There are AAC options for ALL ages, as well as a variety of access methods for different visual/motor needs. AAC users may be completely non-speaking, have a few words, or even be gestalt language processors.

Research actually suggests that giving access to AAC (specifically speech-generating devices) and education on utilization actually SUPPORTS verbal speech in children! The best way to acquire an AAC device is to consult with a SLP that has skills in the evaluation, selection, and coaching process. Here at Resonate, our SLPs have experience in selecting the most appropriate device, providing client & family education and implementation, and collaboration to
provide the most extensive support possible.

There is no “right” way to use AAC. Just like babies learn to talk through babbling, AAC users need to be allowed to explore their device through babbling (or repeating/hitting random buttons). AAC should ONLY be used for the individual’s communication - what THEY want to say, WHEN they want to say it, and HOW they want to say it. We can model what we *think* they might want to say, but the device is not for us to prompt them to follow directions. It’s THEIR voice.

Meet our speech team! Sarah Killian, M.S., CCC-SLP, is our phenomenal licensed SLP. We’re grateful to have her here at Resonate, as she brings years of expertise to our team.
Reid Edington, MT-BC, CF-SLP has started her clinical fellowship year here at Resonate - we’re ecstatic to have a dually certified music therapist+speech therapist on our team. If you feel that you or a loved one would benefit from support or would like more information about AAC, please contact us. If we can’t help, we’ll connect you with someone who can. resonatemt.com

Happy AAC Awareness Month!

Halloween and trick-or-treating offer a chance for community connection, fun, and celebration, but the excitement can also bring unpredictability and new routines that can be challenging, particularly for neurodivergent trick-or-treaters. Wearing a costume, walking in unfamiliar environments, or encountering unexpected sensory input may lead to sensory overload. Taking time to prepare for these changes can help make the experience feel more manageable and empowering! Our neuroaffirmative educational book about trick-or-treating is designed for people of all ages, with a balance of describing the event, autonomous options like taking breaks, as well as actions the trick-or-treater may take while trick-or-treating. We hope our resource is helpful for individuals of all ages who may benefit from more information on the entire process.

To access our neuro-affirmative book on trick-or-treating, just go to our site resonatemt.com and click on 'resources' then 'blog'.

What does a day in the life of a private practice music therapist look like? The life of a music therapist can vary widely based on what populations they work with and the setting, so come along with us to learn about what a day in the life of one of our music therapists, Micaela Garcia, MT-BC, can look like!

Mica likes to start her day in our resource closet, finding tools to use during her sessions. She knows her clients well, which helps her pick out her clients’ favourite books, items, and activities to use within sessions.

Most of Mica’s day is spent actively in session, using all kinds of instruments! Since most of Mica’s clients have a mental health focus, Mica facilitates emotional processing, autonomy/self-advocacy, and other goals through songwriting, lyric analysis, and active music making.

Some clients prefer digital music to live instruments, so Mica often uses Garage Band or Logic, programs where clients can work towards non-musical goals that are important to them using music creation as the medium.

At Resonate, we believe that sensory needs always come first. This can look like engaging actively with clients in sensory-focused play, often facilitated musically. Mica often finds herself exploring these activities with her clients and finding new items and ways to meet their individual sensory needs, whether that’s meeting vestibular needs with a swing, playing with toys with various textures for tactile input, or climbing through this padded sensory tunnel for proprioceptive and vestibular input!

There are a LOT of behind-the-scenes tasks for a music therapist, including paperwork (assessments, daily notes, progress reports), earning new client preferred songs, coordination of care, and all the daily tasks that come with being an employee. Taking a moment for a cup of tea and a breath while knocking out admin tasks is helpful!

Men posing with fish, or our therapists posing with their favorite tool to use in session? You decide- it’s hard to tell! Learn more about some of the many therapeutic tools we utilize within sessions as we help clients reach their goals.
Marissa (music therapist) chose our therapy pup Pencil as their favorite therapeutic tool. Penny helps our clients emotionally regulate, learn boundaries, and provides them with fluffy hugs as needed.
Mica (music therapist) selected the emotions spot as their favorite therapy tool. This character is the mascot from a popular children’s book, “A Little Spot of Feelings.” These books help our clients learn to identify their emotions and self-regulate.
The piano is Gabby’s (music therapist) go-to tool. She uses piano to provide sensory supports to our clients through auditory input and by encouraging/facilitating communication through song.
Amy (music therapist) loves to use guitar in her therapy sessions. She uses the guitar to write songs to help clients with emotional processing and to work on our clients’ self-advocacy skills through choosing songs to play.
Meghan (music therapist) chose the recording buttons as her favorite therapy tool. The recording buttons provide great auditory feedback for Gestalt-Language Processors, encouraging them to try new phrases.
Dexter (music therapy intern) enjoys using our singing toad during his music therapy sessions. The singing toad is used to work on building our clients’ fine and gross motor skills by running the stick along the toad’s back to create a croaking sound.
Sarah’s (speech therapist) favorite tool to use in her speech therapy session is bubbles. Bubbles are generally a high-interest item which Sarah uses to target multiple speech and communication goals.
Reid (music therapist and upcoming speech therapy clinical fellow) loves using books, especially books that can be sung, during her therapy sessions. These books can help our clients explore a variety of goal areas such as practicing emotional regulation, learning coping skills, and navigating new experiences.

Learn more about incorporating the body into therapy from our awesome music therapy intern Dexter! Communication between the brain and the body is a two way street: your thoughts can cause physical sensations and physical sensations from your body can impact the way you think. Check out our blog post linked below to dive more into the biology behind our mind-body connections, therapeutic practices that incorporate both the mind and body, and interoception, the awareness of your internal sensations.
