Many clinicians are taught what to do (offer a safety plan, give crisis contacts), but not how to think about su***de risk. As a result, risk is often rated in arbitrary ways, without a clear clinical basis, and management decisions are made that are not well matched to the person’s actual level of risk.

We often trust the most confident voice in the room, but 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑓𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒, especially in ethical decision-making. This is important particularly if the code of ethics relies on vague language like "𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒑𝒔", "𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆", or "𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏". These terms offer little to no practical guidance especially when you're dealing with an ethically difficult situation in your practice.

While many of these posts from psychologists carries genuinely positive, inclusive message, and normalises the experience of being single, also valuing self love and life (𝑏𝑜𝑡ℎ 𝑏𝑟𝑜𝑎𝑑𝑙𝑦 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑝𝑠𝑦𝑐ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑤𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠), they reflect some ethical concerns (𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑉, 𝐴.1.; 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑉.𝐷.1; 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑉.𝐵.2; 𝑃𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑖𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝐼𝐼; 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑉.𝐷.3; 𝐼𝐼𝐼.𝐽 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝐼 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑).

Now, these posts are not unethical like breaching confidentiality for example, but they represent a pattern of behaviour that the Philippines' Code of Ethics for Psychologists and Psychometricians tells us that 𝐢𝐭 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐁𝐄 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐬𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞, 𝐚 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝. On reflection as a psychologist, your ethics spidey sense should make you feel uncomfortable with these kinds of posts.
