Our founder, Jane Peterson, has been invited by the Dementia Community to deliver a live webinar on one of the most common challenges in dementia care: supporting people who are reluctant to engage in mouth care. The session runs from 2:00–3:00 PM (GMT) and focuses on practical, experience-led approaches that support comfort and dignity in real care settings.

since our last post about sponge swabs we have noticed from comments there are still a lot of care services using these for palliative mouth care.

These should be avoided, however there is a difference between the different coloured sponges.

They are on the medical safety device list in England and have been banned in Wales due to someone choking on a detached sponge!

From the dental clinic to training carers.... my journey ❤️

As care home residents become more dependent on staff for daily mouth care, oral health is frequently overlooked & brushing is often missed, despite its importance to dignity and overall health 😊

In surveys & care home visits, I identified a widespread lack of oral care training, limited confidence among care staff, & significant challenges in supporting residents with dementia, many of whom resist oral care 🪥

With minimal professional support available and concerns that this situation would worsen as the ageing population grows, I felt compelled to act 👏

Knowledge Oral Health Care was established to address this gap by providing care staff with practical, evidence-based oral care training & professional support, aligned with NICE guidance, and has since grown into a national network of dental care professionals delivering accredited oral healthcare education across the care sector 🦷
