H.R.D is the result of the humanitarian spirit, charitable commitment of Miss. Léoncie MUKAMWEZI the current Coordinator and Founder of the work of children with learning disabilities and sensory. Having noticed the plight of children with disability and all kinds of disability near the Catholic missions such as parishes and dioceses, she wanted to know what is happening on the hills in countryside. Thus, in 1999, conducted the trip in various parishes and has, revealed some sad situations in which lived many children with disabilities, due to multiple disabilities (physical, sensory, mental, psychological trauma due to the genocide ...), were without any follow-up, often abandoned or hidden by their own families. Thus was founded the H.R.D Association in 2000, as mission to promote special needs education for children with mental and sensory disability. Every year was marked by several monitoring activities initiated in response to different situations of children with disabilities. Work of psycho social development of children, health care, schools, education, rehabilitation and discussion group with families has been done to raise awareness and sensitize the community while addressing the specific social needs of children and young people with intellectual disabilities. The H.R.D has initiated several activities to participate in or contribute to eradicate bad habits and attitudes related to discrimination against children with disabilities. Parents also are asked to show their involvement with school supplies and hygiene materials for school children in specialized centers. Some parents find difficult medical insurance and transport costs to specialized centers for the treatment of chronic diseases. Visits and awareness sessions for families or guardianship of the children were performed in order to foster acceptance of children with intellectual disabilities in the community. The message to be transmitted is to say this:
Children with disabilities are ours: love them. The center continues in efforts to fight and defend the rights of persons with disabilities. Our role is to promote educational and social activities for children with mental and sensory disabilities. Through funds from the Lilliane Foundation, several children were assisted in the education of special schools, inclusive, primary, secondary and vocational training and are medically monitored by various health specialist, taking into account his disability or illness . The H.R.D is also expressed through the special support of children and the different training of local institutions to maintain and support the implementation of the special education and inclusive project. It continues its mission to assist its target group through several devices which support or care of physical and mental health, special education and inclusive, functional rehabilitation and vocational training and economic reintegration in order to promote the autonomy and social participation of disabled people. Our organization emphasizes the quality of services which requires appropriate infrastructures and personnel with diverse skills enabling them to develop in order to be able to teach children with sensory and mental disabilities while allowing them to reach a self-critical and optimal autonomy. This autonomy must be exercised both in the implementation of the daily activities of H.R.D to begin the search for funds, in search of recognition of rights and institutional representation within civil society. In fact, some children have been deprived of the affection of their parents respond to difficult situations and the consequences of the genocide that befell the country in 1994. This will allow us to improve the living conditions of orphaned children in situations of mental disability who have just completed the phase of rehabilitation and schooling at the special school and will be grouped in sheltered workshops for their leadership and community integration. We have children with different categories of mental handicap: mild, severe, moderate and profound or sensory difficulties and other acquisition or learning. The role of this center is to facilitate the reception of students with severe disabilities or profound currently enrolled in the school center H.R.D / La Miséricorde. The second situation is composed of 39 orphaned children without known families. Some were at the orphanage and they were referred to specialized centers for medical treatments related to their learning disability.
