🌿Please get your news from sources that stand for truth, not hysteria. In this article, High Times does a good job discussing Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS), or “scromiting,” as the media now likes to call it (cringe). “Scromiting” wasn’t coined by medical professionals, it originated on social media, but news outlets love it because it’s easy to sensationalize. As High Times says in this article, “scromiting” sells and science doesn’t. So next time you see a news anchor warning you about “scromiting,” ask yourself: are they reporting science, or selling fear?
Here are the facts about CHS:
🌿 CHS is real, but rare. CHS was first identified in 2004, and it involves cyclical vomiting and abdominal pain that is relieved by hot showers/baths. Yes, it is caused by heavy use of cannabis, namely THC. The key diagnostic feature is that symptoms resolve when cannabis use stops and return if use resumes, demonstrating a direct cause-and-effect. So if you go to your local ER with vomiting and are diagnosed with CHS, the diagnosis is not definitive unless discontinuing cannabis is the only thing that resolves the symptoms.
🌿The reason cannabis causes CHS is poorly understood, but it is thought to be caused by an overstimulation of the receptors within our endocannabinoid system (ECS). Genetics, THC levels, and environmental factors are believed to play a role in the development of CHS. The hypothalamus, a brain region that regulates body temperature and vomiting, has a high concentration of CB1 cannabinoid receptors, which THC binds to, and when overstimulated it may lead to a paradoxical reaction where cannabis, which is meant to help nausea, actually causes it. Heavy long-term use of THC is thought to lead to a dysregulation of the ECS, affecting gut-brain signals, leading to nausea, vomiting, and issues with thermoregulation.
🌿Recent studies into CHS have found genetics play a role in its development and specific gene variations affect how THC is processed, potentially leading to receptor overstimulation. Past president of the International Cannabinoid Research Society, Dr. Ethan Russo, who is a neurologist, psychopharmacologist, and CHS expert, has done recent studies that found five different genes with mutations that were present in people who had CHS symptoms, as compared to people using as much cannabis daily without CHS symptoms and no gene mutations.
Something to ponder:
🤔Who benefits from amplifying cannabis harm narratives? Here’s a hint: when legal w**d expands, cannabis replaces other substances 💊🍷… and then suddenly the media discovers a “new” syndrome with a terrifying name that boosts ratings, and generates more money. In fact, Big Pharma spent over $5 billion on TV advertising in 2024, and networks like CNN and Fox receive a significant share of that revenue. CNN itself noted that cutting pharma ad time could “cripple” its operations.
Moreover, Big Pharma has historically lobbied and funded campaigns against cannabis legalization efforts, including campaigns that use fear-based messaging both at the state and federal levels. This is because cannabis legalization causes Big Pharma stock dips and reduced sales (they lose billions💰), especially with drugs for pain, depression, anxiety, and sleep. Furthermore, alcohol sales are steeply declining and are currently at a 90-year low. This is particularly evident in legal states, and recent research shows people drink less or not at all when cannabis is a legal option.
🌿Cannabis has been used as medicine and for spiritual purposes for thousands of years, well before Western medicine. Please don’t let the media, Big Pharma, Big Alcohol, and other greedy folks use fearmongering to profit off of your pain. Think for yourself, do your research, advocate for your health and for yourself, trust your intuition, listen to your body, and talk to people/health professionals who truly want you to heal (like us). 💚

Cannabis can cause rare vomiting in heavy users. The media made it sound like a pandemic.
