Guardianship isn't always the answer. When someone needs help making decisions, there are less restrictive options that preserve their rights and autonomy.

The Supreme Court WINGS network (Working Interdisciplinary Network of Guardianship Stakeholders) and Virginia Center on Aging have created a new plain language guide: "Less Restrictive Options in Virginia: Guardianship and Conservatorship Are Not the Only Options."

This resource helps families and professionals explore alternatives for healthcare, personal, and financial decision-making support—options that maximize self-determination while avoiding unnecessary court orders.
