Sometimes self care can be daunting. With all the buzz around the phrase self care, there is little to no recognition of how hard it can feel to take care of yourself when you've experienced neglect (emotion or physical). It can feel very overwhelming to give something to yourself that no one ever gave to you. The shear act of giving to yourself exposes the part that hurts the most. It can feel very counter-intuitive. It can feel empty, hurty, and just plain sad, or stir angry grief. So, maybe what self care is getting at, is being gentle with those feelings. Soothe those feelings with tea, or a nap, or a walk around the block. Treat those super vulnerable feelings with softness and care and not with shame and guilt that come from emotional neglect.
