Keep your Immune System Healthy and Strong !

Winter is a challenging time for our body’s immune system, but the way we approach the arrival of winter presents even more challenges.

Viruses and germs are more likely to spread during the winter, increasing our chances of contracting a cold or flu.

London has just plunged into colder, shorter days, which means our immune system is working harder at this time of the year.

Let’s analyse how we can protect ourself from illness by taking care of our immune system.

How Our Immune System Works..
Your immune system is your body’s line of defense against illness and disease. You can only do so much to minimize your risks of coming into contact with harmful bacteria and viruses, so your body’s immune system takes over when you are exposed to these dangerous germs and helps to protect you from illness.

Your immune system produces white blood cells, which fight off infectious disease and foreign materials. When your immune system isn’t functioning properly or is depressed, it can’t produce enough white blood cells to fight off infection and you become sick. White blood cells fight off bacteria and infectious disease.

Another important element of your immune system is antimicrobial peptides. Antimicrobial peptides fight off viruses, bacteria and fungi – even to the point of battling cancerous cells. Your body naturally produces antimicrobial peptides, but you can take supplements to stimulate your body’s production of these little warriors. Antimicrobial peptides also have other immunomodulatory benefits.

Protect your Immune!

Nutrition Planning..

One of the easiest things you can do to ensure that your immune system is functioning at its best is to make sure your body is getting all of the nutrients it needs. Healthy eating habits are essential in winter as unhealthy habits can lead to depressed immune system responses.

You hear year-round that eating healthy is important. Eating healthy always is important, but it is a vital function to ensure that your immune system is functioning properly. Try to eat plenty of vegetables and protein, and reduce your carbohydrate and processed food intake. You don’t have to eat perfectly all of the time, but improving your eating habits meal-by-meal can produce direct results in how well your immune system deals with the challenges of winter.

Protect your Immune System!

Stress Management.
Stress makes it more difficult for your immune system to function properly, thus increasing your risk during the cold winter months when you are more likely to contract an illness. Stress produces the hormone cortisol, which weakens your white blood cells’ ability to fight viruses. Cortisol also increases blood pressure and blood sugar, increasing your body’s risk for other medical complications in addition to repressed immune function.

Reduce your stress levels to reduce your body’s production of cortisol, and boost your immune responses. Try to get a full night of sleep every night, and practice relaxation techniques to lower your overall stress levels. Take a magnesium supplement in conjunction with exercise to reduce cortisol levels. Omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamin C can also reduce the negative impact of cortisol, making it easier for your body to fight off illness and lowering your blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

To help lower your stress levels a regular massage is essential. So, treat yourself!
Call or message me to book yourself an appointment to help reduce your stress and cortisol levels.

Finally, Your body responds to emotions.
Reducing direct stress is only one part of the equation to keeping your body healthy and happy. Nurture yourself, spend quality time with friends and enjoy relaxing activities that make you happy. Keeping your mental state elevated has a direct impact on your stress and cortisol levels, which has a direct impact on how well your body’s immune system functions!

Be blessed with all that makes you
happy and healthy today and everyday !

So I had the privilege of visiting the Body worlds exhibition in London last week with my dear friend Pentony O'Hagan

What a great experience!

Fascinating display of human bodies in various states of dissection. Every part of the body carefully presented - nervous and vascular systems, skeleton, muscles and tendons. Not macabre at all, just very educational. Makes you appreciate the body's complexity and beauty. Even suitable for children. You'll learn more from one visit here than a year in biology class.
And there I read an article that I wanted to share.

The strain of modern life

Stress can kill !

It may send our minds spinning, rob us of sleep, throw us off balance -
Without us ever being aware of its affects.

Originally, however, our body’s stress response evolve to help us survive.

When we detect a threat, it readies us fight or flight.

When you are running for your life, basics are all that matter.

Your breathing rate goes up, your heart races, and your muscles respond immediately.

This fight or flight response worked well when stress was caused mainly by wild animals or by enemies physically attacking us.

In the 21st century, however, work, financial worries, complicated relationships and traffic have taken place of wild beasts.

They permanently stress 1 out of 4

Before bed time eat handful of cherries 🍒 or drink tart cherry juice 🥤
Cherries are jam packed with melatonin, the same hormone created by your body to regulate sleep 😴 patterns.
Then steep yourself into a hot bath to relax your muscles 💪🏽 and your mind 😊

Reduce tension headaches, an improve head rotation and flexion.

Do you sometimes wake up with a headache and a stiff neck, or when yo try to turn your head when driving you feel tension and pain in your neck? This could be due to tight suboccipital muscles, these muscles are found at the base of the scull and attach to cervical spine and are responsible for extending the head and rotating it. They can become tight because of forward head posture or how you sleep. There are two ways you can release them; with a peanut ( two tennis balls taped together) or foam roller REMEMBER be gentle when doing this if your symptoms become worse stop.

To release them first take your foam roller and place it on the ground, gently position yourself over it and place the base of your skull on top of the roller. Without putting any extra pressure slowly rotate the head to the left and right. Do this for about 20-30 seconds, if you feel you need to perform, repeat. When you get up your neck should feel more relaxed, try rotating your head to the side and see how it feels.

If you opt for the peanut opinion, begin by constructing the self release device. Lay on the floor and place the device at the base of the skull. Now without placing any extra pressure begin to tuck your chin in slowly as if you are trying to get a double chin. Do this for 50-60 seconds.

After a thirty year career entailing the polar opposites of office based sitting balanced with running and strenuous gym work the injuries became more frequent and harder to manage.

Based upon a recommendation at the local Crossfit Gym I came to see Sev after suffering another recurrence of lower back pain. She offered me honest and straight-forward advice on the duration of the treatment and the effort that I need to put in myself.

A programme of healing, maintenance and development ensued, focussing upon a combination of massage techniques , homework based upon simple short and effective video tutorials and introductions to bespoke forms of exercise, that best suited my body’s requirements and were aimed to compliment and supplement my day to day lifestyle.

As with restorations of any type a deep commitment is required from the owner whilst dedication and passion is needed from the restorer, which Sev exhibits in abundance.

A rehabilitation based upon the latest research, technology and techniques is the end result.

“Extremely professional, very successful treatment. Clear explanation, very friendly yet serious manner. Would strongly recommend. Thank you Sev. ” – Shahid

Sev's effective combination of muscle stretch and manipulation released the imbalance around my knee. I was subsequently able to walk without limping. She also advised me of follow up exercises. Highly recommended.

Sev has a wonderful calming and positive energy! At the beginning of each session Sev has asked about my concerns and training. Every massage has targeted my back but also worked on particular areas of my body that would have been affected by exercise, for example I have been running so my legs needed a lot of work.

As the sessions have progressed the massage as got deeper even though its uncomfortable at times it really has worked wonders with my mobility and easing aches and pains.

Sev has given me a lot of invaluable advice on all aspects of my health including the amount of water I should be drinking, training and recommendations for Pilates, she has also guided me away from exercise that might aggravate my back like road running and she’s also suggested alternatives.

I’ve also received a thorough after care stretching plan and guidance on how to stretch before exercise and even how to lift my son and the best way to sit when using my laptop. One of the best piece of advise as been about how to sleep with a pillow to help ease the back pain I experience at night.

Sev is a natural and clearly passionate about massage and general health and well being. I will most certainly carry on having massages with Sev.
